Axel 's has recently changed ownership and we wanted to give the new management a chance. However, we were quite disappointed. Food was mediocre, service was slow (and we 've heard that from others, too), and the prices high for what we got. We hope they will consider moving back to the supper club model with a small soup and salad included in the meal vs. being ala carte. Plus, there is no small size or either of those items, so a small salad was $12.00! Hopefully, they can get things worked out as this has been a favorite restaurant of ours for more than 30 years.
We were very excited about our recent dinner reservation at Axels it has always been one of our favorite places to celebrate any special occasion. However, we were very disappointed with the quality of food this time. We were told they changed their menu two months ago and their meat distributer in January. The bull bites were not the tender juicy chucks of beef we were used to being served. The baked potato's were cold inside. The walleye was full of bones and the fishy taste was completely overpowering. I was unable to eat it. I did appreciate the $37.00 discount toward my walleye fillet. This is not the level of quality we are used to while enjoying a dinner at Axels. In the past, a manager has always came to our table and asked how our dinner was unfortunately, even after explaining how unsatisfied we were with our barely eaten meals we never saw him. Thankfully our server was very polite and accommodating and the atmosphere is the same warm inviting place it has been for 30 years.
It is not the Axel's we use to love. Coconut shrimp is not on the menu anymore. The chicken sandwich and burger were not as good as they use to be. We love the ambiance but unfortunately the food is not like it use to be.
Picked this place based on location/ambiance, which both are unique. The anniversary dinner I had ended up failing expectations. I ordered a very nice ribeye steak, asked for it medium and it came back rare; I was disappointed and had it re-cooked. The server was understanding, and said “I'm sorry, dessert is on me tonight”, so we considered it later. What came back was a bland, rubbery steak. The dessert tray came out, and we got the cheesecake. What came out was half the size of what was shown to us- not sure if that's normal. And, though not the biggest deal, the dessert WAS added to my tab... it was not free. I didn't say anything about it. The most seasoned item I had was the green beans. I think this place would appeal to senior citizens the most. I would not recommend this place for a special occasion/ to anyone younger than 55.
