Ristorante Monte Barone - MATTINATA

We happened upon this quaint hillside family run restaurant on our recent stay in Baia Delle Zagare. We had been out touring and stopped in to check it out while the family was enjoying a late lunch during their down time. They were very hospitable and allowed us to look around. We were impressed with the cleanliness and the spectacular sea view from this rustic open air restaurant from the very beginning. We booked dinner that evening and ordered one of their specialty orecchiette pasta dishes, and their grilled seafood plate with grilled vegetables which are prepared over a stone wood burning grill at one end of the restaurant. Everything was excellent, right down to their home made white wine and limoncello blend. We enjoyed ourselves so much we returned the very next evening and enjoyed another fabulous grilled seafood dinner with one more of their specialty orecchiette pastas. The menu is moderately priced and the portions are good. They also offer home made olive oil for sale, which is well worth the money. The staff are all very friendly and take time to make your dining experience a pleasant one. All in all a very clean and relaxing open air restaurant with a beautiful sea view and warm ambience. It is no surprise to us that they have had a successful eatery since 1968 and we would highly recommend.

I’ll start off by saying the service and views are excellent. The quality of the food, however, is quite poor we had an antipasto, primi and shared a secondi. The first two were alright, a solid 6/10. My partner had a piece of fish in her starter that wasn’t fresh and tasted horribly. The secondi we shared was a frittura mista, which we immediately noticed as not being fresh and some pieces were even smelly. Not good considering a frittura is the most basic dish any italian place should master. I found it to be overpriced as well, as some of the other reviews have mentioned. I will not be returning.

We came there in the time that lunch was already ended and they were no seving anymore but we asked and they made an exception. We were alone in the place and they was treating us great. We tried different kind of food and local home made drinks, they gave us some tips for the staying and our trip and all in all the total cost was moderate. A must go restaurant in a beautiful place
