The food is incredibly fresh and delicious, surpassing anything else in the Marion/Carbondale area. The prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are generous. Plus, the family that runs the restaurant are some of the kindest people you'll ever meet.
We have been protecting China Wok for years, so obviously we like it, or we wouldn't come back. In an area that has no ton of restaurant options, this place is pretty good. Having grown up in the Chicago suburbs for ten years and living in the Orlando area, I often had better Chinese. But for southern Illinois, China Wok, it is as good as it is for taking Chinese food. I like bovine broccoli and chicken mushrooms, both with roasted rice. The woman likes sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken and we both like the crabs rangoons. The egg rolls are also okay, but I prefer spring rolls.
Quality of food at this restaurant has gone down drastically over the years. When I moved here 8 years ago this was the best Chinese food in town. Over the past couple years it seems like it's slowly gotten less and less quality and flavor. Fried chicken dishes taste like oil and the sauce doesn't help to mask that. Wontons in the wonton soup are overcooked and have no taste, barely any meat in them anymore. Disappointed this used to be such a great restaurant.
We've ordered from here multiple times, but this experience was really disappointing! We ordered sesame chicken, and it was so tough that we couldn't eat it. I've always enjoyed their crab rangoon, but this time, every single one was burnt. What a letdown!
I've visited this restaurant three times, and unfortunately, my experiences have been disappointing. The Egg Foo Yung was served twice, and both times it was too thick and not cooked properly in the middle. I also tried the beef chop suey, which was the worst I've ever had. The beef was tough and difficult to chew, and the dish was overloaded with broccoli. There were no water chestnuts, bok choy, bean sprouts, or more than just a couple of tiny pieces of bamboo. It seems like they use cheap ingredients and lack pride in their work.
