This was one of the best Austin finds I've had in a while. A group of my friends and I had the best time and BEST food when visiting Puli Ra. We had the cheeseboard, Roti tacos, Chark board special, and the custard... HOLY MOLY! The cheeseboard, was perfect... every detail and taste was amazing and one of the most reasonable prices I've seen in Austin! The special had an amazing rice made with beet vinegar accompanied with the most phenomenal fish. The custard had so much depth, it just kept on going. Trying Deepa's dishes manages to make you feel so sophisticated and at home, simultaneously. Bravo! Thanks Deepa for being so amazing, sitting with us a bit, and for existing. I'm bringing my husband this weekend for our anniversary meal!
Wow. I've been twice now, and Texas Keeper is now my favorite place to go because Puli Ra is there. The cider is refreshing, it's in a beautiful country locale, and the food is stunning. It's incredible what this one woman operation does. Both times I've gone I've done the cheese board (which varies and is always tremendous). Make it a habit to try either the Boudin or Chark board (if she has it available) because the flavors are so developed, and there are always incredibly surprising elements to it. When I go I also habitually order Roti tacos all around. The aioli and herbs are so flavorful and light. It's deliciously elevated comfort food. Deepa is incredibly thoughtful and intentional in her cooking, so do yourself a favor and ask her about her food. You will have lovely conversation, and gain a deep appreciation of her vision for Puli Ra. She is a treasure! I've read prior reviews, and am honestly surprised by them. Most of the complaints seem to be about the perceived value of the food they are receiving. Some things are a matter of taste, but it's also another thing entirely to understand Deepa's approach to her food. If you asked her, she would tell you that she sources every little thing (even down to the flour she uses to make her naan) locally which means she makes her purchasing decisions about her ingredients, she is choosing to support and build community in Central Texas. There's no detail too small she's thought of it all carefully, and honestly for what you pay and what you are truly getting, there is an incredible amount of value there. This is my favorite place to show people. Go here for a lovely alternative to eating barbecue out in the country. Guaranteed you will want to lick the boards it's served on clean.
Dining at Puli Ra was a wonderful experience that we hope to repeat soon. We ordered four things off their menu- kid version of roti taco, Dan Dan Noodles, Boudin board and Chark board. The roti taco was just right for our son. Mild yet flavorful, and filled with generous amounts of roasted squash over the roti and egg. Dan Dan noodles do actually numb your tongue with all the sichuan peppers, so make that the last thing you eat. Deepa (chef Puli.Ra) warned us early about this. The Boudin board and Chark board were both delicious. Boudin board was slightly bitter, possibly from the crumbled sausage being lightly charred, but I enjoyed the composition nevertheless. The chark board was a really yummy platter of fish (drum) and rice. Both were well sized portions, and we had to take the Dan Dan Noodles to-go because we were so full. We sat inside Texas Keeper, and both bartenders made for wonderful company. Their dry Keeper #1, as well as off-dry Goldrush paired really well with our food. At the end of the night, after closing shop, Deepa joined us for a while as well, providing us with friendly conversation in addition to the food. It was a relaxing and delicious experience in all, and we hope to repeat it. Extra points for being kid friendly!
Oh. My. Gosh. Talk about amazing food. Showed up with a friend and let her order. Think we ended up with the Chark board, cheese board, roti taco, and the flan...NOTHING disappointed. Unexpected and delicious flavors, things I didn't even think I liked, I LOVED. So glad to discover this little gem. Delish. My recommendation? Just show up and ask what you should be eating, let the kitchen order for you and try something new. You won't regret it.
