When you visit Sri Lanka you want to have a grat sea bath, drink Thambili, taste some great Lankan tea and last but definitely not the least, enjoy some great Lankan Rice and Curry. There are many offering of Rice and Curry around the town....From roadside vendors to fancy 5 star experience. They all offer something unique. While researching for such restaurants what surprised me was that I never found Nelum Kole (this particular restaurant) anywhere. Just to be clear, Nelum Kole means Lotus Leaf in Sinhala. There are many restaurants with this name and also serve food in Lotus Leaves. But this particular restaurant is found nowhere in any suggestions. Maybe it was a miss by me but I didn't find it. Which is sad, as this was one of my best finds this time! The setup and ambiance is quite amazing. It is a modern/air conditioned version of a traditional hut. The walls give a feeling of a dirt/mud walls that would find in the villages. The decor is all tastefully done with weaved coconut leaf roofs, traditional lamps, antique items etc. It gives quite a bit of a cozy, homely feeling which I really loved. The food is served in mud pots and pans. But the amazing factor is that there is an incredible amount of varieties available. A meat eater, veg eater can all have a delightful fulfilling meal as the choices are endless. Just their greens section had about 6/7 varieties which I have not seen any where. Many versions of fish, beef, pork curries and other condiments line-up the serving area. The standard is to pick 5 curries along with the rice. But you can add more and pay for the extra which is quite neat. This place gets quite busy during lunch time (and rightfully so) so it might be a bit challenging to think and make up your mind when you choose your curries. But the servers are quite helpful so we tried our best to have as many varieties as possible. The flavors were AMAZING!. We loved every single curry that we tasted. Our taste buds thanked us so many times. I can;t pick just one curry out of them all. We went as a group of 4 so each one of us took a different type so we can all enjoy the endless varieties that were present. This restaurant should definitely be on all lists as one of the best places to dine in Sri Lanka. It's absolutely worth the money that you pay and both Lankans and non-Lankan would have a great time here. Plan for multiple visits in order to enjoy the varieties here. The only con is that it's tucked away in Boralesgamuwa, a bit further than the center of action in Colombo. Nevertheless, a must visit and a hidden gem not to be missed.
This place was excellent a few years ago, I visited him recently and I was dissapointed food. serving is very bad. Now they just have to make money.
The place is built in a wise manner that resembles a country house or a hut in traditional sensual culture. So nothing is comfortable. but it would be a great experience for a foreigner. traditional Sri Lankan food is available. lamm is not nice. Credit cards...accepted parking available, but limited. toilets not clean. service under average.
One of the best in maharagama area. space is a bit dark, but clean. lavish spread. the price is medium. the food is fresh, especially the fish. Parking is also available. the lunchtime attracts a lot of office crowd so they are guaranteed to stay in a bit. that was worth it.
