Jawa Lounge is a chain of coffee shops in Sri Lanka with “around five 5 branches (around?! , according to their website. I dropped in at their Fort shop in Hospital Street two days ago for a cappuccino. The shop has a cozy interior with a charming, intimate ambience. A great place to a sip a coffee while conversing with your friends or family or just staring at passers by in the street through the glass front of the shop! If you are alone and have some time to kill, this is an ideal place to read a book or browse the net on your phone in peace and quiet because the place never seems to be crowded. Their menu features a variety of beverages, their speciality being, of course, coffee. They also have a snacks counter serving a selection of savouries and sweets. The prices seemed to be a little on the high side. I ordered a chocalate muffin followed by a cappuccino. They claim that they serve world 's best coffee. Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, because, while their coffee is alright, it is debatable whether their coffee is superior to coffee served in any other coffee shop of the same class, at least judging by the cappuccino I drank. The staff are friendly and courteous Anyway, if you are in the Fort area and looking for a place to chill while sipping a coffee, you should consider Jawa Lounge.
After checking out of the Fairway Hotel, where this cafe is located on the street level of the hotel, we were a bit lost on how to get to Bentota, 60 miles to the South of Colombo. We'd not organised anything and ther hotel quoted us 12,000 rupees for a taxi... about 5,000 rupees over what it should be. Our phones didn't work and over coffee and a snack we explored the options. Fortunately the Java Lounge manager went out of his way to make some calls in the local lingo and managed to get us a Kangaroo Cab at 7,000 rupees. He was a real life saver and which was why on our return leg back through Colombo we headed straight for the Java Lounge. Bottom line is, great coffee and snacks and very helpful staff.
