Thanksgiving in May. I 've visited La Carreta on Langhorne Road often enough to know that their lunch rush includes quite a number of Centra Health employees. If the badges weren 't enough to identify them, the scrubs would be more dominant indicator.<br/ <br/ In my quest for weight loss I 've mentioned that some Mexican foods can be consumed without carb cost, but eating Mexican every day can certainly be a fattening affair otherwise, not to mention the cost associated with high choelestorol and blood pressure. Sure, most Mexican food lovers like me could eat it every day, but those in the health care field more than likely know the ramifications of that kind of diet.<br/ <br/ Trade Winds Cafe opened this season in a newly constructed business center across from Lynchburg General Hospital and Doyles Florist on Langhorne Road. While fitness walking with Erik Monday he mentioned that it was no use that a cafe had opened since their hours were nonsense. I believe he described the owners as 'obviously retired ' and stated they were 'using the cafe for something to do with their time since they close at 4 p.m. '<br/ <br/ As we approched the business center around 6:30 we both noticed the bright red 'OPEN ' sign. While I simply picked up a menu and an advertisement for their new, later hours, Erik ordered a generous portion of crow.<br/ <br/ When I visit new establishments, especially if the place is 'no frills, ' I immediately peruse the menu for the selection that is unique the item I can 't find anywhere else. I don 't know that I had expected Trade Winds Cafe to deliver (which they do, box lunches or platters for 8 or more with a 24 hour notice) but I wasn 't disappointed when I came across their 'Specialties ' section.<br/ <br/ The chefs kept it simple, but maintained their culinary flair (I 'm being a bit dramatic here after all, it 's a wrap) with the Thanksgiving Wrap: a generous portion of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce is as intriguing as out of holiday season lunch themes can be.<br/ <br/ So I tried it the next day despite the fact that everything besides the turkey wages war on a low carb diet.<br/ <br/ It was worth the sacrifice.<br/ <br/ I 'm a fan of the Flat Out style wrap, which makes for a considerable portion of your wrap ingredients. This wrap, despite it 's traditionally unhealthy insinuations, just plain tastes healthy. You really get a sizeable portion of turkey, the stuffing isn 't overbearing, and best of all, cranberry sauce as literal dressing is not just a play on words, it 's an excellent and playful substitute for the typical mayo or ranch you usually get on an ordinary wrap.<br/ <br/ For $8.91 (includes tax) you can get a wrap, a side (your choice of macaroni salad, potato salad, fruit or chips) and a drink. I chose the fruit, which was a small cup of very flavorful and attractive grapes, strawberries, and pineapple.<br/ <br/ Other items of interest on the menu sound worthwhile:<br/ <br/ Virginia Baked Ham Sandwich $6.25<br/ <br/ Homemade Uncle Ebb 's Chili $3.99<br/ <br/ Chicken Cheddar BBQ $5.99<br/ <br/ Triple Chocolate Brownie $1.29<br/ <br/ <br/ <br/ My encouragement to those in the area Landover Place residents, E.C. Glass students, and Centra Health employees would be, instead of spending the same amount on your neighborhood Hardees or La Carreta, make a healthy, affordable choice. Branch out, buy local, and celebrate one of our most American holiday all season long!<br/ <br/ [hidden link]
