Whilst I didn't have an awful time by any means, and certainly wouldn't really complain, I must say the experience was quite disappointing on balance. Eaten: cod and chips, at table, tea. Prices were rather ridiculous top flight fish n chip restaurants in higher rent locations in London don't often charge more than this. But the quality here was below par for an average take away chippie. Portion size was adequate, but for the price, one might hope for a larger fish. Cod flesh actually was fine at least it was tender and not overcooked. Batter was crispy in places, but somehow underwhelming. Chips were veering toward that weird unpleasant texture not enough to ruin the meal for me, but enough that I wouldn't bother going back. Overall, eating was more an exercise in being fed, than a joyous pleasure. All in all, I couldn't help feeling that they really could fix this fairly easily if they cared and looked around to compare themselves against decent restaurants; I hope they do, as the place has great potential, and isn't that far off not getting it wrong. Service was friendly and appropriately thorough, but a little inexperienced in approach and demeanor, and not stunning for a place that charges over £21 for cod, chips and peas, and a single, non refillable cup of builders tea. They did appear attentive to cleaning; I got the feeling that they cared, but just didn't know better. I don't think they would have survived this way, pre gentrification; I wish them well, and hope either that they and their customers are happy as they are, or that they work on the few things that let them down. It's doable they wouldn't need to drop the prices, if they raised the bar, and raising the bar shouldn't cost them more than knowledge, skill, attention to detail.
Came to try the vegan options. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Have definitely had tastier vegan fish. The vegan prawn cocktail was pretty good though. My partner had Haddock with chips and said it was pretty average.
Nice fish and chips, not greasy at all! Mackerel was dry and overcooked and the vegetables were not fresh but frozen! out of a freezer pack!
I went there for early dinner but they didn’t have the vegan fish that I wanted to have. So I had the chicken burger but was very disappointed. The Chechen fillet was very very thin, no bite and therefore not satisfying. I felt like just eating a thin layer of fried batter. It’s unfortunate because I enjoyed the vegan fish at the other brunch and wanted to support small family business. £8 for this ? I was very unsatisfactory and wished I got vegan chicken burger from somewhere else.
Ordered the lobster sub roll. Had high expectations given I’ve frequented this establishment and always been really impressed, especially the Stoke Newington branch. However, the lobster was dry and didn’t taste particularly fresh, compensated with a heavy seasoning of paprika powder. Given this was the high price item, expected a lot more. Shame.
