We went on a Monday night and while there were plenty of tables available, there were a lot of people there, yet the service was not compromised in the slightest. The restaurant is laid out beautifully and has quite a classy feel which is nice. The menu is vast with lots of delicious looking options. I had the chicken dish which was really nicely cooked, plenty of side veges to tuck into and great flavours. My man had the pork belly which was cooked very well, but the crackle was a bit tough which made it difficult to eat. The mash and jus were delish. We didn't have dessert but they did bring out a jar of lollies with the bill which was a really lovely touch. We'll certainly be back!
Had a pleasant enough evening meal here last week. Positives Friendly service Reasonably priced Good menu Negatives Good dishes slightly spoiled by being marginally overcooked. Pigeon breast salad was a good combination of meat and leaves with very good dressing. The pigeon breast however was slightly overcooked and only just still pink. Mackerel with Beetroot Risotto and Horseradish cream. Risotto and Horseradish cream well executed but Mackerel slightly over cooked. Crispy skin at expense of correctly cooked fish. Would go again in the hope the chef was simply having an off night. 3.5 stars would be fair award but not possible to give. Have therefore erred on the side of caution.
I made a reservation at the Village Kitchen on a Monday evening, having seen the place buzzing every time I walked past Orford Road. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, who kindly gave us the best table in the restaurant by the window! With our meal already off to a good start, we ordered wine and mains of chicken tandoori and pork belly. I didn't really know what to expect, especially having read the mixed reviews here, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. My pork belly was tender, with plenty of crunchy crackling. My husband's chicken tandoori was absolutely delicious the flavors worked really well together. Compare to our sub par experience at Eat17 across the road, I'd definitely return to the Village Kitchen again. Plus any restaurant that brings a jar of pick n mix along with the bill (yes, really! is a winner in my books!
Went for sunday lunch v good value at £8 with a good choice of roasts. Lamb roast particularly delicious and Yorkshire pud great and vetegables fresh. Macchiato yum. Recommended.
Wow ohmygoodness yum! This was even nicer than my mum's Christmas dinners (don't any of you yelpers tell my mum!! You can't really get higher praise than that! We spotted a sign for £11.50 roast dinners. There was a choice of different roasted meats accompanied by all the trimmings. (There was lamb, duck, pork belly, a veggy option...and a couple of other choices Meat joy Marc tried the pork belly while I munched my way through a duck's leg. The meat itself was cooked to perfection...the pork belly has a crunchy top, but inside was meat that just melted away. The duck was moist and fell off the bone. Veggy joy I couldn't work out what spices they used on the carrots and parsnips I think there was honey and thyme, but it also had a warm spiciness, a little like mulled wine. There was broccoli and gorgeous slightly spicy cabbage along with garlic flavoured roast potatoes that had crunchy skins but were fluffy on the inside. Omnomnom. To finish it all off, we were both given a huuuge Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy...although I did need to ask for a teeny bit more gravy it was just so nice! As always, the staff were sweeties. The Village Kitchen really needs to be upgraded to 5 stars.
