If you are on leave from a German university and miss the bad canteen food, this place will vastly exceed your expectations. Whatever the cook of the Five-Star reviews chose to do with his/her life, s/he is clearly not working there anymore. Delivered after a 85 Minute wait, the tuna steak was inedible, the seafood was Deep-freeze supermarket quality in a restaurant a few steps from the ocean, and even the white rice was a mess. The white wine was flat in a country with a wealth of quite complex wines in the 10 to 15 Euro price range, and the service staff topped things off by starting to clean the floor mid-way through the meal, filling the air with rather dominant chlorine fumes. But then, maybe the whole thing is a piece of performance art, re-enacting the ravages of Cabo Verde's failed experiment in socialism, which apparently included bringing their cuisine down to the level of Poland, ca. 1978.
I had found this on TripAdvisor and wanted to give it a try since my boyfriend has family in Cape Verde. His expectations were certainly met and we definitely plan on going back. We went at around 7pm and there was a man playing guitar--it felt rather romantic. Our server was funny, charming, and helpful with our Portuguese. We had the tuna steak and the cachupa--both very good! I'd love to go back and try the other dishes!
A hospitable restaurant serving an interesting range of food from the former Portugese territories in Africa, ran by a friendly Cape Verdean who helped inform about the menu. The cold strawberry soup is certainly different and actually very good! Other food all lovely and helped down with a complimentary Cape Verdean liqueur at the end of the night. One of our better meals in Lisbon and a good alternative to standard Portugese fare.
I would definitely recommend this one. Only came in here by mistake but we were blown away. We went in at lunch and found a friendly Capeverdian waiting for us. She played the roles of hostess, cook and waitress. We watched her rustle up big portions in what seemed like no time. I had chicken in a peanut sauce which was sublime. We shared rice, beans and a polenta mash type thing which you get round Lisbon. We had a vegetarian with us but she was able to make a veg stew. After polishing off the mains we were persuaded in to having a small glass of a very strong spirit from Cape Verde. I was full to the brim by the end because I love the chicken, rice and beans combo! Some of the best food I have ever had!
