Romantic meal with the aim of discovering the typical dish: Flemish stew. We were CONQUERED! Warm atmosphere, you feel very good there. Our server who took care of the floor was great: kind, welcoming, smiling, without overdoing it. We tasted a maroilles flamiche and the famous Raoul-style carbonnade and it was pure delight! (And served very generously) And finally, we were offered a little digestive at the counter just before leaving. We were able to chat with the team. Attention and a moment of conviviality that we greatly appreciated. Everyone is so nice! Congratulations to you. We recommend 1000%! We had filetsteak in brandy and pfefferminz sauce with chips perfectly crispy on the outside and pink in the middle of the taste on the sauce was for to die.
This place really shocked my girlfriend and I. We had been walking up and down, up and down (quite literally) the street which was recommended to us by our hotel reception for an to dine with the locals, and almost gave up. Until we found...Chez Raoul for the second time (we walked past and discounted immediately the first time for some unknown reason). It completely caught us out, as it was so reasonably priced compared to the rest of the streets' tenants, who were charging €15 Euros for a main course. Chez Raoul checks in at about €11 for moules. Who couldn't resist moules frites for €13, so close to the country they call home? Yet we didn't go straight into mains, opting for a local cheese tart to begin, which despite being in France and eating copious amounts of cheese for a day or two, we could still taste the strength of the fromage (no bad thing at all). Decor was what really got us in, and the place was quirky and alive with artefacts from its namesake Raoul de Godewarsvelde, who we found out was a famous Lillois singer. The blue and white theme and attention to detail was wonderful, especially the paper napkin holders. Despite the decor and moules frites, it was the service which really topped the scales for us. Our waiter was a middle to late aged man who had incredible character and charism keeping every group, from families to couples, happy with jokes, voices and general good natured help. Overall, we would 100% visit this restaurant again and will certainly return when we do to Lille, all the while recommending family and friends to go.
