This is my staple food whenever I am in Lexington and not with my mom. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. There is always one vegan option on the menu, and it is always spectacular. I cannot praise this place enough.
I drove to Lexington to drop a friend off half way. We meet his ride and decided to eat at Gumbo Ya Ya as a vegetarian friendly recommendation. Just to let you know they rotate their menu so be prepared. They did have two vegetarian dishes one spicier than the other. I ordered the mushroom and Spinach Etouffe the spicier of the two. It was really good over the thick white rice. I would have preferred a brown but it was still relatively good. Everything is pretty much made ahead of time. This is not gourmet dinning but simply good budget food. The restaurant had interesting art throughout and the staff was friendly. I'd avoid the praline desert as it was just pure sugar and a few nuts. The cookie was good though it too was a bit sugary. In any case I found this to be somewhat unique and of healthy options for the vegetarian dinner. I'd recommend it if you are in the mood for its style.
This is a budget diners dream. For five bucks you get a big plate of one of their stew like dishes over rice and pasta and a slice of garlic bread. My fav is the mock choux- a creamy saice lightly seasoned and perfect for seafood. I have issues with spicy food, but this one is always a safe choice. My beter half says the peanut sauce is the best canjun in town. It isn't offereed nearly as often as it should be, but he always orders it when it is on the menu. The rice and beans is always a reliable treat. Their bread pudding is also well worth saving room. Slathered in bourbon and buttery goodness it is dense and gooey and just lovely. This place is easy to get to and there is always plenty of parking. Staff is friendly and efficient.
I drove into town and stopped here first thing- starving. It was very good... but I wish they had more than one vegan option per day. What they did have was very good and the price was great! Definitely check it out!
