A hidden gem! If, like us, you come to places like Leiria to experience traditional Portuguese culture, this is the place for food and hospitality, old style. There are usually two main dishes on offer, cooked in the kitchen by Julia. You can try a little if you are not sure, there is no menu and unless you speak Portuguese (which we do not) or French (O-level failed) it is fun sorting it all out. Try starting your meal with a plate of cheese and ham (or have it for lunch) to start soaking up your litre jug of house red! But be careful, or you will not have enough room for a home made desert. We paid less than 20 euros for the two of us! No cards. The locals are v friendly and probably surprised to have foreign tourists. Our only gripe was that like most places they insist on having the TV on. A bonus is that there were open on a national holiday.
This eatery is what the Portuguese call a tasca . A no frills restaurant but it feels a bit like eating in someone’s home. The food tastes homemade, handed down family recipes and cuisine. A 'tasca ' restaurant always has a daily set menu with a choice of soup, meat or fish main course, traditional puddings or desserts. Don 't ask for a 'a-la-carte ' menu as they won 't have one! Most of these local traditional Portuguese restaurants are family owned and it’s very easy to establish a special connection with the waiters and owners. The connections with regular clients is extremely strong and important and to the point that the owners and staff will address the regulars by name, recommend a dish, tell a joke or strike up a conversation... The hotel owner recommended this gem of a restaurant and it certainly didn 't disappoint as my meat dish of the day was absolutely delicious. The Portuguese restaurant 's name on Portuguese tiles outside and on the inside of the walls are absolutely stunning, wow! These tiles are sometimes referred to the Portuguese Blue delft and it 's history is well known. This practice of tiles arts and patterns still exist today throughout Portugal. A beautiful craft of craftsmanship and colours most definitely! A big thank you to the owners Chef Julia, (the boss), Manny/Manuel Fernando the husband, (front of house, tables service, bar and more)...and to Mario, the family friend who helps around everywhere.. This 'tasca ' restaurant is small but it certainly punches above it 's weight as far as Portuguese cuisine is concerned and the very friendly staff and service is exceptional. Thank you to you all for a lovely lunch experience and a very delicious Portuguese meal. Will definitely be back again when next in Leiria city.
Homely comfort food that doesn't hurt the pocket. Instead of a standard menu, there are just a handful of daily specials, yet every dish we ate was top-notch. The staff was very kind. And let's not forget the desserts, they were incredibly delectable!
Atendimento muito educado e atencioso pelo o casal, donos do restaurante. Comida caseira e muito bem feita. Local pequeno e acolhedor, com ótimo preço.
