Donut Star - La Jolla

Star Donuts is the only traditional donut shop I've found in the Mission Hills/Hillcrest area. In a neighborhood with many retirees, it's a gem that deserves our support. One thing to note, though: their cake donuts seem to be either undercooked or the oil isn't hot enough, resulting in a lack of that slightly crunchy surface that would elevate them to five stars.

The Donut Star is a charming little spot with private parking and a few tables inside. They offer a variety of donuts, breakfast items, sandwiches, coffee, and more. With a wide range of donut flavors available, there's truly something for everyone! The prices are quite reasonable, fitting the usual range for donuts. The older gentleman at the front was very friendly and straightforward; it felt like I had known him for ages as soon as I walked in! The donuts tasted incredibly fresh—soft and moist, making it easy to enjoy two or three of them. Personally, I gravitate towards chocolate or maple flavors, but you can't go wrong with a classic old-fashioned donut! I also tried one of their taro coconut donuts, and the combination was delightful. I might have to come back and try them all! I can't wait for my next visit to San Diego—this place will definitely be on my list!

Was here a few times before and then tried several other donut joints in the area. The product availability is always a hit or miss in other places. But every time I was in this place, the case is always full and donuts fresh. Staff are fast and polite. No bad experience yet, definitely my place from now on.

It was our last day in San Diego and we wanted to stop from a local donut shop for breakfast and candy. I'm glad we stopped here. She was very friendly and super sweet! She even gave us additional donuts for our trip home as soon as she realized that we flew out today. The donuts, breakfast sandwiches and Vietnamese ice cream coffee were all delish

We've been wanting to try this place for a few months, and we finally got the chance. At 6:00, the donuts were incredibly fresh. The glaze just melts in your mouth. The maple bacon donut was fantastic, and the fruity muesli donut was amazing! There are so many other varieties we want to try, and we will definitely be back!
