The chef is there grilling and cutting right in front of you and focused on you and your food. The place is nothing fancy but the service and experience is still levels above what you get in your typical fine dining restaurant in Japan. Highly recommended. Ps. Looking through the reviews, the only bad ratings are because people wanted to eat there, walked in, and didn’t get a table. Yes. It is a small, simple, chef restaurant with few seats and you will need a reservation. Nothing wrong or unfair with that people!
We traveled from yokohama to visit Himeji-jo, but no possibility that I leave the opposite without a proper cove meat dinner. searched Google reviews and we made reservations at kokubu. we were not disappointed! in any case call them ahead for reservations, 2 weeks in advance we were not able to get the exact date we wanted, but to the luck our timetable was flexible. the chef was pretty busy filling a big Bento order when we first arrived, but once he got our service was great, super friendly, and the steak was just delicious. we had our 4 year old daughters with us, my wife and I ordered a set menu with intention to share only with her, but the chef prepared extra sweet for our daughters (we are honest, they pay for the bark not the sweet). if they are curious about the price, for a combined 350g bark meat, a few side rice, and a few drinks a piece it was ¥31000. everyone was very nice, I love the fact that it's family in the possession of the boss and his wonderful mother who walked the place for 47 years. the employees were all super nice to use and for our 4yr old, which made our dinner so much more pleasant.
Chef was amazing and accommodating. steak was soou good. yes I had kobe during in tokio, but that was simply perfectly cooked and served with the best free items. I also decided to have the garlic, which was a great addition. when they are in cobe, they try to get reservations.
A very good Kobe-Rind experience. it found it different, maybe something better than matsuzaka bark. chef is alive and speaks fluent English. the chiefs assistant/wit person was friendly and spoke basic English and they accept large credit cards. the price is expensive, but if they are in cobe, I think it is a good one-time experience to tickle their Bucket list. real cobe bark meat is not like other bark meat, it is much easier, but I would probably not pay for cobe bark meat in the near future, regular Japanese wagyu is already very good and much cheaper. the restaurant is located a few layers above, but there is one elevator to bring it up there. book them in advance, because the restaurant is small and seating are limited, and they are booked almost every day. during our dinner session, the cook had to answer more than 15 phone calls that try to make reservations 50/50 English/Japanese speakers. I have booked about voyagin who requests a commission to call in their name, I would probably book right next time, the cook answers all phone calls and he speaks fluent English. the only negatiw I would comment is the fried rice, I would skip the garlic fried rice, it was average and I could not really taste the garlic, I think too much rice was added to accommodate the large number of people who diluted it, the aromen. I had better in japan elsewhere. everything else was great. regarding sirloin vs zartloin, I can't decide they were both good.
So a familiar place mother (90) and son who leads this place and really cares for the guests and high-quality eating! the menu is tiny, but they get their Kobe-Rind (sirloin or tenderloin) and it is delicious! the roasted garlic rice was also really good! highly recommended
