Nara Sushi - Kitchener

I used to frequent this restaurant pre-pandemic and back then it was a good restaurant. Maybe not top of the list here in Waterloo Region but a pleasant place to go. I am so very disappointed and dissatisfied now. Never before have I been served beef as tough and unchewable as doc Martin boots, but I have now. Everything I got that uses the beef cutlet was just tough and unchewable. The breading around it was that tough and brittle of the bargain bin frozen breaded foods in grocery stores. The sauce was good though. The cheese wontons I had were also quite disappointing, as they tasted mostly of the breading, and only a little of the cheese. Of all the sushi restaurants I have been to, these wontons come I. Last place, and the difference in quality is clear. The green tea I ordered at the beginning, I can forgive the leaves in the cup as it is clearly an aesthetics thing, but the tea itself had an odd soapy flavour to it. The rolls I had were pretty good, and the sushi pizza was amazing, especially with just a little soy sauce to give it that little extra something. I dare say it is the best sushi pizza I ever had. Sadly, one item at a $30 AYCE restaurant isn’t enough to entice me back, and takeout rarely survives the drive home still piping hot and crispy the way it should be enjoyed. For the last point of the review, we come to the wait staff. I really can’t say much bad, but nor can I really say much good. It kind of felt like they were still learning parts of the job, or perhaps just weren’t confident and it showed. I wasn’t exactly in at a rush time so it is entirely possible that is the case. I just would have liked for them to have at least checked in on me now and then. If they had, they would likely have heard all this from me, rather than read it here if they read their reviews. I truely hope they do too, as I really do want Nara to get better. I don’t think I will ever be stepping through those doors again, so I will likely never know, but for the delicious joy of the past, I hope they can pull off raising the quality of their kitchen food at least.

Was the first one in the restaurant and got our first round of food fast.. 3 more tables came in for a total of 4 all together. We put in our second order that should have taken 5 min .. we sat there for 25 min with no food at all. They were to worried about the take out orders that just sat on the table for 15 mins then they were the people in the restaurant. We got up and left. Never gave us a discount or nothing. Paid $70 for maybe $25 worth of food. Not impressed. Maybe take care of your in restaurant customers first!!!

Price was fair and food was great. Selection was huge too. Only negative was cleanliness of bathrooms which is a big deal in sushi restaurants. Would return if bathrooms were cleaned up but to be fair an employee was in bathroom ahead of me and did very thorough wash of hands but door knob wasn’t up to par. Food was tasty and fast courteous service.

I am not a sushi eater at all, not a fan of it; but with that being said I enjoyed what Nara sushi had. It open my eyes to Sushi and I kind of like it been here twice now in less then a month. The service is good, and they had training chopsticks for me to use
