This facility within the Ferens Art gallery in Hull has been comprehensively updated and refurbished since I last visited it.The quality of the produce is unquestionably good but the prices are ridiculously high, based on what I was going to order.A small bottle of Fentimans soft drink was asked for and I almost fell over when the cost of £3.10 was asked for!!!Now, I know that this facility is owned by the City Council although it operates under a wholly owned limited Company and that Government financing of local authorities has been slashed since 2010 but come on! £3.10 for a 330ml bottle of anything is outrageous!!!I asked a member of the museum staff employed by Hull Culture Leisure Ltd about the arrangements and was told that salaries had been reduced since privatising the culture and leisure service by the Council.Disgraceful!
We met our son and his girlfriend in Hull and had a coffee in Ferens café. We had the sofa and arm chairs in a light filled room. Very good service and excellent coffees. A relaxing and good place to meet and chat. The food looked very inviting-next time we are in Hull we will go for a meal at Ferens.
Poor Hull! Hull City Council mean everso well but so often the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Here is a perfectly situated Restaurant, very comfortable, in a fantastic Municipal Art Gallery. But it is trying too hard! It is trying table service when Self Service might work better. And it 's attempting silver tea service silverware, when an ordinary Urn would be quicker, cheaper, more appropriate for speedy Patrons oppressed by having seen too mush Art far too concentrated! We had Quiches which were adequate, had they been half the price! Rocket Salad de riguer but rather flavourless. Good chips. Laboured table service, despite our being the only Customers! Could Hull City Council perhaps meet with Item No.1 on its Agenda : Who is the Ferens Restaurant there to serve how can that service be more welcoming, more efficient in the outcome?
Have visited this fine café on several occasions now and always found the quality of food excellent, with service to match.
