Zone Restaurant - KINGSCOTE

Arrived about 5pm on a Saturday evening and could only see this place was open for dinner. Was packed when we came for dinner about 6pm which we thought would be a good sign. Should have known better... We chose a chicken burger and fish and chips, with 2 glasses of Ozone wine. The Chicken burger was dry, tasteless and the chips were cooked in fat that was very old. The fish and chips was slightly better, the fish was tasty but the chips suffered from the same issue as the burger - cooked in old oil. The accompanying coleslaw was mushy... Huge portions, but not very nice food. As for the wine - it was a clean skin, which sometimes can be nice, but on this occasion it wasn't. I actually left the wine as it was so nasty. Fortunately for us the bottle shop was still open, so bought a good bottle of NZ white and took it back to our room... We wont be dining there again...

This is the restaurant located within the Aurora Ozone hotel complex in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island. It is quite comfortable, clean, and staffed by friendly helpful staff. It offers the usual array of Pub food rather than being a fine dining experience. Be aware the oysters are of the large Pacific variety which we found a challenge, but the main fishes otherwise were quite reasonably presented and priced. The Angus beef burger was a bit below standard with odd bits located through the beef, not prime mince. The wine list was good and offered both local and national wines at fair prices. The dining options are limited in Kingscote so you will probably have at least one meal here.

On our first night in Kingscote we decided to try the bistro at the Aurora Ozone Hotel on the seafront. Though we did not have a reservation we were warmly welcomed and shown to a table. The bistro was very busy but the service was outstanding. The menu was varied but the prices were a bit expensive. We ordered a starter of basil pesto and parmesan bread ($7.50) which was delicious. My main course was roast pork belly ($28). This is one of my favourites but was quite bland and not crispy skinned, which was a disappointment. My husband had the Linguine seafood pasta ($29). He was expecting pasta with seafood mixed into it. However the pasta came with mussels, prawns and a crab - all in their shells. Though he enjoyed the taste he said it was very fiddly and if he had known how it was served that he would have ordered something else. There were less expensive items eg chicken burger on the menu. As there are very little eating places in Kingscote I would recommend one meal at this hotel.

NEVER AGAIN!!! TOTALLY RUINED OUR HOLIDAY ON KANGAROO ISLAND.We arrived for Xmas lunch at 12:15pm. At 1:30pm we asked why Entree hadn't been brought. At 2:05pm Entree arrived at table. Lamb Roast main was roasted chops at least 60% fat.Second visit, kangaroo steaks were as tough as old leather. Coffee arrived cold.Third visit, Entree took 30 minutes to arrive. After another 30 minutes, Waiter tried to give my partner Scallops that he didn't order. Offered him a rush order for the steak he did order. We refused and walked out.

Dinner in this pleasant restaurant was excellent. Friendly and competent service and good food. A table reservation is recommended.
