We searched for local dog-friendly restaurants and found the Crown and Anchor. We visited for Sunday lunch on Easter Sunday and were surprised to find that we were the only diners there. Overall, we were quite disappointed with our experience. The drink selection was decent and the bartender was friendly, but the food left much to be desired. The main menu on the wall had a variety of options such as burgers, steak, and pie of the day, but lacked descriptions of what each dish came with. The lack of detail made it difficult to choose. The small menu board offered additional options like roasts, but there were no starters mentioned. When our food arrived, the barmaid failed to warn me that the plates were hot, causing a close call. My husband's roast potatoes were undercooked despite looking crispy on the outside. The garlic bread we ordered as a side was a cold baguette with cold butter, possibly garlic butter, spread on it. Desserts were average, but once again, there was no menu provided. When it came time to pay, we were informed that the card machine was not working and only cash was accepted. We had to go to a nearby shop for Cashback. Overall, it was a very disappointing dining experience.
During our stay at the River Bank Guest House on the opposite side of the Great Ouse river, we visited the nearby pub for a meal and drinks. The food was excellent, and there was plenty of parking available. Guests have the option to sit outside by the river, and the establishment is very welcoming to dogs.
This place now has new owners who are making a number of nice changes. They are very friendly too. We have been there quite a few times now for either drinks, meals or often both. They do a very good carvery on a Sunday. We have sampled a number of items from their menu, I particularly enjoyed the prawn curry and my other half really loves the burgers they do. Portions are quite generous also. We love their homemade desserts especially the crumble and the caramel apple pie. They have plans for a beer garden which will be a great addition.
Since Chris and Chloe have taken over the pub has been A great friendly inviting place. Personally we look forward to the weekend when we know we'll see new found friends there. Good food and drinks and a family friendly place. Continuous improvements to decor and facilities being made since the previous landlord left it to ruin which is also great to see.
