If we are lucky life is made of a series of beautiful cycles and i am very lucky that, for another year at least, yet another of those cycles has closed perfectly for this summer this evening with another delicious dinner at Medusa, known to locals as Poppy's place. Just returned from dinner, I add to my review of last summer now from rom the deck of our gullet cast into the pitch of a star strewn night in the stellar harbour of Vathy, This night of a lunar eclipse, the sounds of the waters of the Aegean lapping at our bow of our boat and the jangle of the bells on goats grazing the cliff tops above prove that dreams are palpable. The elements around collude to remind that this nation, this place, is the true cradle of the Gods and its inhabitants are duly and justly beatified. I am, with dear friends, navigating the Aegean once again and, just as last year, we have spent just one night here in Vathy, this place of magic, fishermen and their archaeic tiny boats, modern yachts, high rock faces and lustrous and mysterious deep waters. Behind the port a valley of peach groves stretches that serves all of Kalymnos and beyond. As simple as it is sophisticated Vathy's class and raw chic is barely paralleled. Despite our visiting just once last year our welcome this early evening was that usually reserved for friends of long standing. We revelled at the setting sun and the rise of a huge moon under an abundance of bouganvillia at the taverna to the left of the harbour facing the sea. The ever friendly waiter (forgive me i forget your name) summers here and winters in Darwin, Australia ... certainly a world and seemingly a future century away. Dinner, after a few purchases of local raw thyme honey and fresh figs however could only be at Medusa. Poppy greeted with a knowing embrace and served us a repast of kings. Organic, fresh delicious mezze that will, again, go down as a dinner of our year. I will simply list what we savoured as a guide for your possible choices as i implore you to treat yourself to a dinner here. Beetroot salad with blue cheese and walnuts, boiled vegetables with local olive oil and lemon juice, aubergine and also cheese saganaki, crispy feta with sesame seeds and crispy filo pastry drenched in honey from the Vathy hills, octopus fritters. local grilled sausages, an incredible fish and vegetable soup and baked feta with peppers and onion. Our white wine was local, of the house and drenched in friendly sun. It is hard to believe that it can get better than this. I will end now to swim in the night waters of the harbour to be later lulled to sleep by the rocking of our boat and vowing to return.
