Old Weang Ping - Irving

I almost hesitate to write this review because it's currently one of the best-kept secrets around. The food is incredible and very affordable. Pat, the waiter, along with the $3 surprise beer and the fruity drinks after dinner, truly make this place special. We've been coming here nearly every week and plan to return tomorrow. Just a heads up: it's cash only, but you won't need more than $40 to $50 for two people.

The true owners of Old Weang Ping are back! Pat and his wife have returned from Thailand to take charge of the restaurant and to bring authentic Thai flavors to Oakland. The prices are now lower than before, and the dishes are more authentic. I've tried every single item on the menu since we visit Old Weang Ping at least twice a month, and I'll keep coming back! The ambiance is fantastic, and the customer service reflects the warmth of Thailand. Everything on the menu is incredibly delicious! Just a heads-up, the restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, as it is a small family-run business.

This restaurant used to be a solid 4-5 star establishment, but ever since the ownership changed, the quality and flavor have dropped significantly. I ordered some of my favorite dishes and was really disappointed, as the flavors were nothing like I remembered. The former owners have opened a new place in Alameda, so it looks like I’ll have to make the trip to enjoy the food I used to love.

I heard about this place from a friend, so we decided to try it out. When I entered the place, it felt a little bit like traveling through Narnia because the decorations inside were so different from the outside (the inside had a bamboo aesthetic). When we ordered, we asked if they had the Duck Curry because many other reviews mentioned it even though it wasn't on the menu. Since they were out, we ordered the following (for a total party size of 2): Fish Cake This tasted good and was a little spicy (note: I generally don't eat spicy food). The sauce that came with it was spicy and sweet. The cabbage underneath the fish cake was probably just for looks because it was dry. Panang Curry I liked this, though the beef was slightly tough (note: you can choose whatever meat you want). We were able to request that this dish be made Mild, though it still tasted a little spicy. The curry reminded me of gravy in terms of flavor and color. Jasmine Rice You have to order this separately because no rice comes with the curry. Pad Thai We decided to get this because of my low tolerance to spice. We chose pork for the meat, and this tasted good and freshly made. The noodles were on the thinner side, and they were really flavorful. Normally, one entree and one appetizer is enough to fill us, so we were surprised that we were able to finish everything. However, both of us were a little stuffed afterwards. Total price was $36.40 (before tip), so this was a really good value. It was cash only, but I think that might have been because the credit/debit machine wasn't working (they had a sign that I quickly skimmed). All in all I enjoyed this place. The food was good, and they had a lot of reusable dishware. There's a quaint charm to this place, and our server (who I'm guessing is also the owner) was very friendly. ECO NOTES (Dine In) Dine In Dishware: Reusable plates and bowls Napkins: Single use disposable paper napkin Utensils: Metal fork Water cups: Short stem wine glass, though the default is a combination of Thai tea and water (as described by the server), which is interesting and also might be caffeinated. If you want just water, you'd likely have to specially request it.

Cat sitting nearby in the condos off the 580 freeway it was really cool to come across this place that was by a neighborhood. It has such a finance wooden shack vibe, it was tropical and hole in the wall but spacious as well. It was a Weekday night and it really is in not a busy location so i suspect a lot of people do takeout cause the food is so good and people would prefer to eat at home but i would 100% recommend eating her for the ambiance and feel. the service was excellent, we wanted to try everything and cause we were cat sitting, the cat owner was paying for this meal and we got everything for around $70 including tip and it was so so worth it, of course we had left overs it was just two of us.
