Went here last Sunday based on recommendations from several people. We have had a cottage in Barrie since 2 years ago, and have been lucky enough to find some excellent restaurants in town. This was not one of them.Appetizers- Bruschetta-This is an app that was overly oily. Bruschetta , if done well, should be pretty plain- fresh tomatoes/ fresh bread, a little garlic. this had none of the ingredients.Egg rolls- [ordered by the other couple we wee with] tasted like 3 day old used oilMain course- short ribs- the meat quality was decent, but they decided to smother it with truck stand type gravy. My friend ordered the schnitzel, which didn't look too appetizing. The ladies each had salads- my wife had a watermelon greek which she really thought was subpar.Maybe we hit them on a bad night; But usually a restaurant will have some redeeming dishes between 4 people. None of the courses was worth eating. travel 10-15 minutes into Barrie and you will be much more rewarded.
Mother's Day usually means paying more than is necessary. We had Mothers Day Brunch buffet at Davidson's. It was an eclectic mix of foods. Focus was on breakfast and desserts. Very little vegetables and the roast beef needed gravy support. We have had better dining here than the brunch. However they were able to fit us in with a late reservation and they had plenty of other guests.
OK...first of all, this restaurant is actually called 'Davidson's Country Diner', but this site wouldn't allow me to add it as a new addition. It's tucked out of the way, outside of Barrie, and just a stone's throw from a new resort/condo/marina facility called Friday Harbour. My advice would be to get in before all those city people move in and find it.After 65 years of serving up meals, you know they must be doing something right. We dropped in for a coffee and a snack and were charmed at the quaint and cozy décor. The coffee was excellent, but the pecan pie and home made bread pudding with caramel sauce were second to none. Both were served just slightly warmed with a large dollop of fresh whipped cream on the side. Seriously, this was the best bread pudding I have ever eaten anywhere, including my own kitchen. If the desserts are anything to go by, I can't wait to go back for a meal, and hopefully upgrade my 4 stars to 5.
We went for our anniversary after hearing how amazing this place is. We went on a week night, we were the only patrons. The food was just okay....I would not say it was amazing. We wouldn't go back.
