If you needed to know...one person gets the bread, meat and cheese on sandwich. The other person then finishes the toppings for sandwich. And the last person rings customer up and puts sandwiches in bag as well as napkins. Seems pretty simple to me.
Heading home after a week in Mammoth for high altitude training. The four teens I was transporting agreed to stop at Subway since Schatt's in Bishop was a zoo. We decided to continue on the road a bit and pulled into the Independence Subway. The building had a cool middle-of-nowhere vibe with a general store attached to the restaurant (or is it the other way around? . You could easily imagine the place in its heyday before the water was drained from the Owens Valley. We walked in and waited in what we thought was a fairly short line, 5 people ahead of us. There were three employees behind the counter. It soon became apparent that the sandwich maker was either new or severely challenged. He folded each slice of meat just so, like in the commercials, and painfully arranged them on the bread. We waited about ten minutes before the first in our party ordered. When it was my turn I realized that this guy must have been a recent parolee from the State Prison system. He was covered in white supremacist tattoos including a pair of swastikas on his elbows. He was soft spoken and cordial but I couldn't get past the ink. The vegetable guy and cashier were almost equally distasteful but I figured we'd get our sandwiches, eat and drive away, never having to return. Speaking of distasteful, as I ate my 6 inch on jalapeno cheese bread I discovered that the roll was stale, almost disintegrating in my hand. I ate the meat, wrapped it all up and we got out of there quickly. This place does not do a good job of representing the Subway brand. The least the owner could do is ask his tatted employees to wear long sleeves while they are dealing with the public. I am certain that I will not return to this restaurant.
Always seem to have rude employees who are clueless. They lost my business for good and I am a local. Ugh.
I was passing through to Mammoth on Saturday and had the pleasure of being served by Scott. He offered us a taste of the fantastic smoked turkey and recommended the steak and egg sandwich on flatbread for our late breakfast. One word: Awesome! The service was excellent, and the sandwich was really delicious. Plus, the restaurant was spotlessly clean.
The staff were very friendly, and the restaurant was pleasant and clean. We stopped by while returning from Lake Tahoe.
