I was told that it would take 45 minutes for my curries to be ready. This seemed on the long-side, however still acceptable. I returned at 8pm as organised. I was told to take a seat and that my order wouldn't be long. 35 minutes later I received the order, with very little apology or explanation as to the wait. If I wanted dinner at this time I would have just made it myself. I was not offered any discount or freebie which would have left me feeling a bit less bitter. When I got home our naans were cold, which was not surprising seeing as I watched them sit on a counter for 30 minutes while I waited for the curry. The curry was delicious, which makes this experience even more annoying as I am torn whether or not to return.
Have heard great things about Dawat and chef Jimmy, someone not afraid to spice things up. Jimmy was receptive and happy to chat about recipes, recommendations and level of spice in each dish. Some great dishes, goat curry, kofta, dahl and cheesy naan. Our group of 8 was well fed and we'd serviced, and yes, great value for money. Thanks Jimmy and gang. Definitely on my top 3 for Indian on Hobart.
Best Indian restaurant I've been to after 7 years in Australia. Very well executed and no holding back on spice and heat. Friendly family run business.
LOVE this place....So authentic. Spice was just right and the mango chicken was a lovely sweet alternative. The tandoori platter was a great starter! See you again soon.
I am from the UK and Indian food is my favourite. Up until now I have not been satisfied with the generally small, basic menu or flavours of the food that I have tried in other Indian restaurants. Last night I suggested to my husband that we go to Dawat for dinner. As we live about 25 minutes drive away, he wasn't very keen on going to an Indian restaurant that we hadn't been to before. We ended up going and oh my goodness, am I glad we did. My husband who usually has been unimpressed with the Indian food he's eaten before said his lamb bhuna was the best curry he had ever eaten, not to mention his face when he was eating the Tandoori starter and his garlic naan. I asked for chicken vindaloo and requested it to be 9/10 hot. Jimmy bought out a sample of what 9/10 would taste like and I am so pleased he did as it was incredibly hot. I decided on 7/10 and my vindaloo was the best I have had in Tasmania. The heat of the curry did not overpower the beautifully balanced flavours and I was in heaven. The last thing I want to mention is the warm and extremely friendly welcome that we received. Jimmy's hospitality was fabulous! We had a lovely, relaxed and really enjoyable evening. If you're looking for a delicious Indian meal, then I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend visiting Dawat. You won't be disappointed! We will be going back soon!
