First, the food is fantastic. For instance, the sautéed spinach we recently ordered was perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned, allowing the fresh flavor to shine through. Second, the manager is wonderful. She greets us whenever she sees us and makes sure we feel taken care of, and the rest of the staff is genuinely happy to see us as well. That’s why we've been loyal customers for twenty years.
This is my favorite restaurant for Chinese food along the southern shore. I have never had a bad or even mediocre meal here. The sushi is always incredibly fresh and tasty. My favorite dish is the Shanghainese boneless duck, which is packed with perfectly cooked duck and fresh vegetables. Honestly, any dish with duck is an excellent choice. Just go there—you won't be disappointed!
My family has often visited Gourmet Garden, and we've always enjoyed the food and service. However, this review focuses on their sushi. Recently, my wife and I decided to embark on our own sushi crawl and selected four different restaurants, not all Chinese, to try the same sushi roll and compare our experiences. The roll we chose featured tempura shrimp and spicy tuna. Gourmet Garden won hands down. Everything in the roll was incredibly fresh, it was a generous portion, and the flavor of the tempura was outstanding. I was surprised at how subtle the tempura flavor was at the other restaurants. While I won't name the other places we tried, they all had good reputations for sushi. In fact, two of them were recommended by separate people as having the best sushi on the South Shore. Before this sushi showdown, I wouldn't have ranked Gourmet Garden among the top sushi spots on the South Shore, but after this experience, I definitely do.
The food was very very good! The problem was the waiter. He could not get to us in time or get us food out in time. We waited a half an hour to get appetizers and it was not that busy in the restaurant. Did not come back and asked if we needed anything. When he did come he spilled water all over my hands and my daughters as he was pouring. Luckily we pick the cup up away from our plate so he could fill it or else our dish would have been full of water. Very unpleasant demeanor. Apparently he was upset at all the work he had to do that night. There was a woman who waited on the tables next to us she was phenomenal she took their order after hours was put in and they got their food before we did. So if you go there make sure you ask for her. The only saving grace was that the food really was excellent.
Amazing food. The staff was really nice.
