I've worked in hospitality for the last 26 years and that man should not be working front of house. I frankly found the whole experience bizarre. We won't be returning. We visited the Clachaig afterwards and received a lovely welcome from the bar staff who couldn't be more helpful.
I had the worst service ever at this restaurant, worse than fast food or truck stops. We were brought water with butter plates, had to ask for bread, and received basic white bread. The waiter appeared without introducing himself and asked if we knew what we wanted. The food was decent, but then the busboys dropped silverware while clearing our plates. We waited 20 minutes for the check, which was dropped on the table without a word. I had to ask for a pen to sign the bill and was told I couldn't charge it to my room because I hadn't left a card at the desk. Despite being booked for two more nights, we didn't eat at the hotel again. My father-in-law, normally calm, was also upset. The whole experience was comically bad and ruined our evening.
Attached to the Kingshouse Hotel, this is a convenient restaurant with ample indoor and outdoor seating. In the winter, they have plastic globes with heaters inside for those wishing to dine outside. The food presentation was great but the taste was a bit bland; I would’ve liked some more flavor. Breakfast was good, as there was a nice spread for those staying at the hotel.
For starters, we had breaded haggis balls (served with mustard mayonnaise), soup, and ham terrine, all of which were good. For mains, we tried the venison burger, venison pie, and mushroom risotto. The burger and pie were tasty, but the risotto was unusual – more like a rice pudding with oily mushrooms on top. The service was satisfactory, and we enjoyed teas and coffees outside. While the prices may be a bit high for a bar-style lunch, the hotel's location on the West Highland Way attracts many walkers, resulting in a loyal customer base. Overall, the Kinghouse Hotel is definitely worth a visit for its stunning surroundings and decent food options.
Stopped for lunch. Restaurant was fully booked, which is understandable for a very popular tourist destination. What isn't acceptable though, was the very rude, abrasive way we were dismissed by the staff. HE was very rude when there was no need to be. Won't be back.
