There were only simple snacks and pre-prepared meals available. I had the iced latte and that was good, one of the better ones I've had overall. It was quiet even though it was around lunchtime probably because there weren't any hot meals available. The interior is nice and spacious with an upper seating area which looks out over the expansive ground level. The staff member was friendly.
The menu may be mediocre, but Lamitte Cafe in Haymarket is a handy stop for a quick coffee and free WI-FI between shows at the Capitol. Most people head to Haymarket for two reasons – to catch a show at the Capitol Theatre or to visit China Town and Paddy's Markets. For me, it's often to head to the theatre as I'm a massive musical nut. This year, I caught a performance of Swan Lake, performed by the Australian Ballet, as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS, which I saw for the first time a few weeks ago. On both occasions, I was looking for a quick bite before the show; something a little more satisfying than packets of Maltesers and Pringles from the Candy Bar at the theatre. Lamitte cafe sits smack-bang across the road from the Capitol. It's not the most exciting-looking cafe in the world, but it does offer free WI-FI, perfect for a quick scroll through Instagram. Food-wise you can choose from a range of ready-to-order pies, quiches and slices, or make your selection from their cafe menu, featuring staples like Fish and Chips, Smoked Salmon Salad and a range of toasted sandwiches. They've got a breakfast menu featuring a range of specials, and a handy Show Time Menu, perfect for pre-show dining. On a recent visit, I was in the mood for something sweet so I picked up a square of caramel slice and washed it down with a glass of the house white. We also ordered the Fish and Chips, round medallions of fish coated in a tempura batter, which for the 25 minutes it took to cook, could have been a tad bit crisper. Lamitte isn't all that bad, it's a pretty decent spot to pick up a quick coffee and reasonably priced meal. The service is a little slow though so be prepared to wait. Good thing they offer the free WI-Fi to pass the time. brendonthesmilingchef.com
