If your not a cockney and you were not brought up on this food you just wouldn't understand. It's an east end tradition. It is not to everyone's pallet, just like foie gras or caviar isn't to mine.
Finally tried the oldest and the first (obviously) fast food restaurant in London. Found this place on YouTube and had to try it. Was reluctant at first because the review on Zomato wasn't convincing, but F. Cooke has a good reputation on Google so I decided to give him a shot. I love the cake! Gravy was a bit odd if you eat it alone, but tasted nice when mixed with the cake and mash.
My expectations weren't too high from this place. I mostly went for the experience and history rather than the food. I think it's fair to say I wasn't overly disappointed I had the vegan cake mash of course. Not something I'm going back for. At first the whole dish didn't look too appetizing. The tart was average, the liquor was huge and tiny taste, mash was out of season. The vinegar dress didn't help. Maybe the real deal tastes great? I must add that the service was good.
I've been here a few times and I'm very much in love with this place. I have been here regularly and all I can say about this place is that they serve amazing food. Great quality and generous portions, good ambience and is in a very interesting area. Recommended.
One of the very best Pie and Mash in London. F Cooke's has been around for four generations and the brothers that currently run the remaining two cafes are very interesting gentlemen who make the meal that much more special.
