Cafe Frei - Gyor

Great selection of coffee and super fast service. Very reasonable price.

As of 2022 the coffee quality in this cafe Frei is considerably worse than the one in Győr Pláza. The coffee I had tasted just like a regular latte from mcdonalds.

My all time favorite Cafe in the world! everything is just so delicious!

The first signs a chain is in decline is when there is an inconsistency in the quality delivered across different branches. The quality of the coffee at the Györ town centre branch is alarmingly low. The espresso tastes like those from vending machines. The cortado was so weak it could be mistaken for fluffy milk. The Yemeni coffee with cream was not good either. It is advertised as including whole cream but it felt like it had steamed milk and whipped cream on top which doesn 't qualify as made with whole cream Herr Frei! The menu description promises exotic ingredients (I lived for some years in Oman and UAE and I spend 3 months a year in India so I am familiar with the aroma and taste of these ingredients) but I couldn 't sense any of them (ie. not even a whiff of cardamom). The terrace is fantastic as you can always catch sunshine there and that 's necessary in spring and autumn but if it comes at the cost of wasting money on substandard coffees it is no longer worth it. All sugar dispensers outside are always kept open so they accumulate dust for 10 hours a day to everyone 's delight (see the pic attached). The only reason I don 't give a 1 star ranking is because they (thankfully) can 't wreck the pre made cakes and because the service from the hard working male waiter is as always perfect. Update : The quality of the coffees improved noticeably since I wrote this scathing review 3 months ago. However, I am unable to increase the star rating because now there is another problem because it is summer the bird feces in the large square cracks in both buildings smell very bad. It is not possible to train birds not to congregate in these box like zones but the staff should disinfect them once a week (it boggles my mind how the locals enjoy their coffees and cakes with such odours but maybe in North Central Siberia where many ancestors arrived from this was considered the norm).

The coffee and service were great. The cake I purchased had mould (white furry specs) on top of the jelly part.
