Used to be a canto style restaurant that had wok taste once upon a time, some 10 years ago, but has changed ownership at least twice, the previous owners running the place into the ground with amer-can chinese take out. Not being fond of (real) sichuan style cooking, the spices do not sit well with me, so as such unless you prefer this spicy chill hot version of chinese food, then this is not the place for you. Unfortunately, they can't do canto nor non spicy well. Quantity is also lacking.Perhaps management can try some canto wok taste, as the name suggested. Pricey for what one receives, service is better than the previous owners, who were in death's grip, this place must expand their repertoire, especially if it wants to garner new business. It is still the only real chinese place in Guelph, but skewed way too far towards spicy western (sichuan) chinese. Needs a reorientation.Need wok energy …
The new owners, Yana is who we have been talking to, have made a fantastic turn around to this old Guelph standard. The English menu is more than adequate but there is a second, Chinese menu that is Szechuan and really spicy and delicious. The challenge here is translating what you want or think you might like to the items on the menu with no English description. Time permitting, Yana has been very helpful in guiding us to dishes we have liked. So far, we have enjoyed sliced pork with spicy green peppers with some Szechuan pepper corns scattered around, cumin beef (spicy and very different than anything we are used to,) home style eggplant (on both menus I think,) beef with wide noodles (not spicy and well liked by everyone) and my favourite, garlic shrimp. The shrimp are dusted with cornstarch and fried to perfection. All of this has worked well for takeout. The hot and sour soup is okay but not my favourite. However, after a couple of days in the fridge (bought too much) it was great. I also recommend the Singapore noodles and the various "meat on rice" dishes that make a complete meal for a very reasonable price.Guelph will figure this place out and hopefully support this family as they grow in their new community. Best of luck!
We always love this Chinese Restaurant. They have new owners and we are happy that the food is still good; might even be better. Owner Yana is very friendly. Service is great.
So my friend and I were saying bye to each other but he hit his head onto a sign post pole (haha.) His forehead started bleeding and it was a fairly deep cut so I wanted to grab a napkin to cover the blood for him. We both walked into the restaurant and I asked politely if they had any napkins and it was obvious it was for my friend who is bleeding. The worker laughed at me and said "45 cents." I laughed, thinking it was a joke, but she then tells me, in a serious tone, "you come into my restaurant, not eat my food and all you want is a napkin!? 45 cents." I end up giving her 45 cents and she gives me two napkins. I know it's a restaurant and you should be eating in a restaurant and not ask for just napkins. But because it was an emergency, I figured that she would make an exception but for a first impression, it was horrible and I won't be stepping my foot there ever again.
