The pizza was very good and had different toppings and flavour s. We went there for a xmas do . And was hungry good munch.
I travelled from East London to lunch with my friend. We booked a Sunday roast at The Star in advance. After a long wait, both dinners (Pork and Nut roast) arrived cold and looked very tired. We asked for them to be made warmer and they came back just lukewarm. My friend ate hers because she was so hungry. I returned mine and refused to pay. I asked if there was a reason for the dinners being cold even after being sent back, and the answer was ‘I don’t know’. I left feeling very hungry and very disappointed at not having enjoyed lunch together. We won’t be returning!
I had high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately, the Sunday roast was quite disappointing. The pork, chicken, and beef dishes we ordered were all lackluster and of poor quality. The pork I had was tasteless and tough, and the potatoes seemed undercooked and discolored. The side dish of red cabbage and string carrots, along with a decent Yorkshire pudding, were drowned in too much gravy. The staff, however, were excellent - friendly, efficient, and deserving of praise. I feel sorry for them having to serve subpar food to customers. While we have enjoyed their pizzas in the past, we will not be returning for the Sunday roast.
The Star is an Enigma. It has a great selection of alcohol, though it prices it at central London prices. My wife, two friends and I visited in late October for a Sunday Roast. It’s our local, and although we have eaten at other local pubs before we thought we would try the roast at the Star. The meal was hugely disappointing. I had the beef as did my friend and the meat was grey, over cooked and poorly cut. The roast potatoes were anaemic, nothing like a roasty should be. The gravy looked akin to dirty dish water and swamped the plate and the Yorkshire pudding was spongy and dense. For this we paid the same price as a roast at an establishment that actually takes pride care in delivery of its food. My wife ate the pork, along with the same issues with the veg and potatoes this was mostly fat, belly cut and the crackling was just a lump of uncooked fat. This pub baffles me. The interior could be outstanding. It’s wood panelled and clearly has character, yet they’ve covered the walls in a bizarre mix of old music heroes, yet the music played is modern and loud. They could have included historic pictures of the common and gone more traditional but instead they have painted the ceiling gold and covered the walls in pictures that in no way reflect the character. It unsettling. They are perfectly located to be a cracking venue for people to settle in to comfortable surroundings, watch some sport perhaps, and grab some reasonable but good quality food and drink. Instead they’re a bizarre mix of contradictions with high priced alcohol and poor food. Get the basics right and this place will thrive. Carry on as you are and you will fall. The front of house were attentive and well trained, and deserve much better than the environs on which they serve. All in all, this needs work.
