This is the closest to authentic Chinese i have found. i have been seeking an authentic Chinese meal in Christchurch, not the pseudo Chinese places designed to please the Western palate like the Stix in Ric where all you hear in the kitchen is a micro wave oven heating 2 minute noodles and instant rice! At Golden Boat we were pleasantly surprised by the simple yet delicious plates. Our group ranging in ages 40's -80's, especially enjoyed the duck and the squid on the pre-arrranged voucher deal menu. If you like the Stix in Ric you won't like the decour nor the very friendly but heavlily accented proprietors, and possibly won't get by your Western palate to really enjoy what's on your plate...I felt i was experiencing another world. And they also do gluten free items.
I came here for a birthday dinner with my girlfriend using a deal voucher. The peking duck combo is excellent. We tried deep fried squid, peking duck with pancake roast duck chow mein and deep fried ice cream. All were excellent and better than I have expected. <br/ <br/ It is the best Chinese food I have ever had in Christchurch. The decor is old-fashioned but the staff are very nice and funny. Though they do not speak English well, they are so friendly and willing to help. The table next to us was having hotpot which smells so good,I would definitely visit again and try some of the traditional Chinese dishes that the staff recommended to us.
A group of four of us ate here early in the week. I would gladly go back again, and will recommend to my friends.<br/ <br/ The decor: <br/ As others have mentioned, the decor is very old and tired. The chairs and tables were old but clean, the restaurant itself was clean and tidy. Table menus were in English; I would have liked to be able to read the menus on the walls (all in Chinese). The outside of the restaurant is likewise a little drab.<br/ <br/ The food:<br/ Food was delicious, and good quantities we couldn 't finish everything and took some home. Seafood was wonderful, beef in black been likewise, corn chicken soup very nice, obligatory deep fried icecream very yummy. I 'd give the food 5 stars. <br/ <br/ Service: The restaurant was very quiet (as in, not busy). Staff were attentive without being pushy; food arrived quickly not always a good thing, we felt just slightly rushed and would have preferred more of a break between courses. <br/ <br/ The restaurant is a BYO which was nice; wine glasses appeared quickly, however a request for a beer glass was met with a brief moment of confusion, before a standard 'water glass ' was presented.<br/ <br/ Price was good considering the quality, and quantity. Decor and slightly too quick service were the only real minuses.
This is by far the best Chinese restaurant that i have ever been to. The food is 5 star the staff are super friendly. If i hadn't moved to Europe i would still be going there on a weekly basis. They always greeted me when i came there to buy my late dinner after a night shift. I highly recommend this place!
