Imagine my joy when my visit to SK Mat Människor managed to tick off every single box on the list in a big and gratifying way. Our greeting was friendly and relaxing and we were shown to our table towards the back of the dining room overlooking the open kitchen. The interior is dark yet with a warm feeling. The tables are thick wooden blocks reminiscent of a butchers cutting board, just a bit more polished and stylish with modern decor of green twigs and stones. We started out with some Champagne on the suggestion of the waiter that was like velvet on the palate. Going over the menu we opted for the 6-course tasting menu with the basic wine package. They also have a premium wine package, but I 'd rather check out the standard one first and if I 'd return in the future I 'd go for the latter. Our waiter, who was friendly and talkative, brought in a selection of bread with their home-churned butter that we enjoyed together with the Champagne. A while later the first dish arrived, an amazing composition of black kurrant pickled beetroot, fried dark rye bread, and a herb- and chlorophyll oil. To this a very light red wine from Peirano Estate that was dominated by black currant as well. Wonderful. The second dish continued with fennel, dill, and fish roe and a glass of Sancerre by Pierre Morin. I did nothing else but smile and enjoy myself. Moving into the first more main course it was red cabbage with Norwegian Skrei, mussels, broccolini and creamy broth together with an Australian Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills and Brian Croser. Oh. My. Gawd. This dish had me in awe, and it just kept going from there. The fourth dish of pickled and fried mushrooms, dry aged striploin, herb mayonnaise, and red wine jus was an other extraordinary delight together with a beautiful Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja from 2014 that was velvety and smooth. The second to last dish maintained the high standard I now in a very short while had been accustomed to expect. Local grated cheese from Almnäs on top of a thin and crispy oatmeal biscuit and fig purée, To the cheese was a glass of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Passito from 2009. Oh the combination was heavenly. The final dish was equally magical. Butter poached brioche, burnt orange cream, vanilla ice cream, blood orange slices, and sorrel. In the final glass was some Moscato D 'Asti from 2016 that I, without a doubt, could drink everyday for the rest of my life and be happy. And the combination with the dessert was just mindblowing. So yes, SK Mat Människor delivers an utterly perfect experience. I can 't fault even the slightest thing, and I truly enjoy when I can have a dining experience at a Michelin star restaurant without it being stiff and enjoy a wonderful dialogue and laughter with friends. And even such a thing that one in our company loved the bread so much and the chef personally came out and gave him the recipies for all three different breads we were served is such an awesome way to treat a customer. The whole dinner was, simply put, perfect and I can 't wait to go back!
The meal started out quite well but finished poorly. Choosing the four course meal, the first two courses of raw fish (i.e. the equivalent of Nordic sashimi) and potato croquettes were enjoyable. The final two courses, however, went to ordinary and then unpalatable. The dry aged strip loin (already an unremarkable cut) was cooked to a dry and chewy medium to medium well, which is truly embarrassing for a restaurant of SK 's purported caliber. The final course dessert was atrocious. Three or the four components of the dish were savory, which made the so called dessert perhaps the saltiest dish of the four courses. Completely unacceptable (even with the understanding that Swedes like their sweet and savory dishes). EDIT: For context, I love New Nordic food and, in Göteborg alone, have also visited Koka (which was far and away better) and Bhoga. SK just wasn 't up to snuff.
Can I go with 7 stars here? To be a entirely honest, I'm writing this review 10 months after visiting the restaurant. But it is still worth reviewing, because this was one of most memorable restaurant experiences ever, so it must have worth something. The restaurant doesn't really have a menu. There only two tasting menu options 4 courses and 6 courses. There is also available wine pairing for the tasting menus. There is also a note in the menu that 4 course dinner will take at least 2 hours, 6 course is at least 2.5 hours. Everything is sourced locally and the dishes are up to the chefs' desire. We selected 4 course menu with wine pairing, and the magic started. First we were served the bread with butter both bread and butter are made at a restaurant. Every day. From scratch. Then our wines and dishes started arriving. Everything with detailed explanations about the choice of the ingredients and cooking methods. There was also a detailed explanation about the origins of every wine and the reason it is suggested as a pairing. Every dish presented by a different chef. And you also could see the chefs working right there at the stations, a fully open kitchen format, creating a great ambiance. We didn't even notice how the two hours were gone. Perfect service, perfect food, wonderful experience. Most highly recommended. Remember, it is 7 stars review :
One of the top meals I have ever eaten! We chose the six course set menu (plus a bonus treat the chef added). It was PHENOMENAL. So pretty I wish I had taken pictures. I love when a chef can blend individual ingredients into something completely brand new. Gorgeous presentation. Easy parking lot nearby. Staff is professional and knowledgeable. We were going to be late for our reservation but called ahead and the staff was kindly able to make it work. All around perfection. Definitely set aside a few hours to appreciate the experience.
One of the best meals we've had in Gothenburg! This place is truly great, service, food, wine, atmosphere, it's all obviously been thought about and is executed perfectly. We made a reservation about a month in advanced (seems to be the best availability requires some advanced bookings . We were seated immediately, they can take both your book bag and coat. We ordered the six course tasting menu and it was absolutely perfect. It was the first time I didn't feel super full or a bit gross after a tasting menu which is usually too much or a lot of overly rich food. We ordered the six wine pairing and it very well curated, our server explained all the dishes and wine as we went. The favorites, while hard to choose, were the mushroom soup, duck, the creamy fish dish, and the freshly made hard bread (hah! . A lot of the wines were from Italy or other European areas that paired perfectly. Can't recommend this place enough, if you have a birthday or anniversary coming up it's an excellent option.
