The Wanderer - Funchal

I tried to get in to the Wanderer a couple of times as I had seen the reviews on Trip Advisor. One review mentioned he would book the restaurant before booking his flights, so we did just that to make sure we could experience what everyone was talking about. I am so glad we persevered because it was truly a Culinary Delight. Myself and the real CEO (Sarah) along with my brother and his wife had one of our best evenings ever. Chef and owner Selim adds massive value by taking the time to explain the ingredients and how he came to find them, invent and cook them, every dish was designed to perfection and paired excellently with a drink. We have eaten all over the world in top Michelin Star restaurants and the Wanderer is equally one of the best value for money eating experiences without a STAR....!!! Well Done, Thank You Selim and Team for our unforgettable evening, I do hope we get to meet again.

A divine experience, I wasn’t aware how intimate the setting would be so initially I was surprised. It works wonderfully well, the guys have created a wonderful ambience at their restaurant. The offerings are exceptional, pairing a dish with a very strong stout amazed me! We’d consider the evening excellent value and would recommend to anyone without hesitation. From start to finish, we had a wonderful dinner at The Wanderer. This was more than just a meal, it was an experience. Part of what makes dining at The Wanderer so special is that it is an intimate experience. In our case, it was just the five of us, so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. We were greeted by Christian, who welcomed us with delicious cocktails and appetizers, then introduced to Selim who explained how the evening would go. Each course was innovative, delicious and presented with a backstory, a connection to Madeira using locally sourced ingredients. My husband kept saying how much the experience reminded him of watching Chef's Table on Netflix. Highly recommend making this a stop on your trip in Madeira!

We had the most excellent evening hosted by Selim and Christian. It was a real highlight of our busy week in Madeira. We loved sharing our table with Sven and Steffi who we didn’t know previously. We couldn’t believe the time when we wandered out at the end of the meal to find the streets were empty! We had lost all concept of time as Selim’s cooking and stories are totally absorbing and genuine. Both he and Christian are great company and so enthusiastic. The dining itself is incredible with beautiful new flavours and textures and surprises all along the way. The accompanying drinks were a treat too and matched the dishes perfectly. Thanks so much to everyone for making a truly memorable evening. Can’t wait to come back!

I do not want to give too much so; if you love great food made with real passion to the craft, amazing experience around dining and trying new, this is for you. Just go for it. I usually complain about something but I was left speechless.
