This restaurant, out in rural Virginia, is excellent. If you are in the concentric circle of Castleton Festival, Sperryville, Little Washington, consider the short drive to Flint Hill. The Public House, on Zachary Taylor Highway, won't disappoint. They serve anchovies on their Caesar salad, like a Caesar should have, so heads up. Our server was Tabby, very attentive.
Flint Hill Public House was recommended to us by the inn that my husband and I were staying at over the weekend. After hearing mixed reviews from other guests we decided to take a shot and give it a try. The dining room was beautifully decorated and we were seated promptly upon arrival. Our waitress was knowledgeable and able to make suggestions at our request. My husband and I ended up choosing the crab cakes and catfish per her recommendation. Unfortunately both entrees were quite a let down. The catfish was raw in the center and the crab cakes were runny and served with almost raw red potatoes. I love potatoes, so trust that this was not a deal breaker for me, but the crab cakes left left much to be desired. My husband and I both have many years of experience in the fine dining industry, so we are not ones to complain unless something is truly undercooked. Upon informing the waitress of our problem with the catfish, she returned to say the chef was sorry and that the cut was rather large and must have been the reason for the poor prep of the dish. At no point did the chef offer to further cook the dish or offer a dessert to make up for the poorly cooked dish. My husband and I were not looking for a free meal by any means, but when a chef acknowledges the reality of a problem and nothing is done that is a true breakdown in customer service. We will not be returning on our next visit to the area.
We ate here on Saturday May 2. It was delightful. The beautiful weather and the outside seating added to our enjoyment of our wonderful sandwiches. I had the BBQ pork which was tasty and tangy. My friends had other sandwiches that were equally delightful. We all enjoyed a piece of the coconut cake baked by a neighborhood local. It was moist with just the right amount of sweetness.
Good home cooked food. The brisket was tasty and tender although there was a big piece of fat on my plate. Smashed potatoes were awesome. The tequila chicken was good with just enough heat to remind you that it was Mexican food. It was supposed to ebserved over a salsa verde risotto . I saw e salsa verde but not the risotto. The corn salsa was refrigerator cold and served over the chicken so it immediately cold off he chicken.
