I was thrilled to be able to have a few drinks before watching Cats! The Musical. The service was fast and we were promptly seated. Despite being located next to a hotel, the restaurant isn't very crowded. I think they cater to hotel guests and moviegoers. I'm not sure about their lunch crowd, but I imagine it's busy around that time or after work hours. One thing I really enjoyed was their local tap with a rotating selection from a local brewery. It's a cool concept. They also have live music occasionally. I'd like to come back and see how the place is when it's busier. Our server was friendly and helpful, I forgot her name but she had an Irish accent and was very knowledgeable about the menu.
I haven 't been to this spot since it was an Elephant Castle, but I do like what they 've done to open up the space while still maintaining a pub feel. I was impressed with how much privacy and soundproofing there is one can sit on the restaurant side and not hear the sports bar area, and vice versa. Service is average, a bit uncoordinated, particularly in the bar area, but genuinely friendly. The short kilts on the female wait staff are unnecessary, especially as they are out of sync with the overall package they 're not hiring based on looks and styling at this location). Food is hit miss. The fish taco special on Tuesday $2.99) is a very good deal, and they aren 't bad, come with a nice slaw and pickled onions. One thing that tends to get missed is sauces no hot sauce offered with the fish tacos, no tartar or other sauce offered with the fish burger or fish entrees. My partner had the fish burger and found it very plain and dry. The fries and gravy were really good, though. I had the Guinness Steak boxty, which was more like a giant potato pancake burrito than a true boxty, but it was quite tasty, definitely a good deal for the price. I 'd order it again. It came with a small green salad which was absolutely drowning in dressing, I suggest asking for the dressing on the side. Better than expected in some ways; we came mainly because we were whoring for Scene Points. The Yelp check in offer of dinner and a movie for $23 is one we 'll be using for sure. Just don 't come downtown on a special event night or you 'll pay a premium the once cheap evening parking is all but lost to the new Ice District. Street parking might be cheaper depending on the night.
I visited Fionn MacCool's for the first time the other night before seeing a movie at Landmark Theatre in City Centre Mall. We tried a variety of appetizers including mini yorkshires and shrimp cake sliders, which were delicious. The sausage rolls I ordered were cold inside, but the staff quickly replaced them with hot ones without any issue. We also enjoyed the Ale Cheddar Dip, which was flavorful and came with plenty of dip. I tried two cocktails, with the somersby mojito being my favorite and the pear vanilla spiced lemonade being too sweet for my taste. For my main course, I had the Beef Porter Pie, which was perfect and I would definitely order it again. The specials were a good value, including deals on beer and appetizer/main combos. I would recommend Fionn MacCool's and would order many of the food items again in the future. Overall, a great experience with two thumbs up!
We went to this restaurant for dinner before a Paint Nite event. They had set up the painting area at the front of the restaurant, which was convenient for grabbing a meal before the fun. Although we didn't end up painting, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The menu offered a diverse selection of entrees, different from the usual sandwiches and burgers found at similar places. I opted for the seafood pie ($17), one of four options available, which was served in a delicious pub-made pastry. The food arrived in about 15-20 minutes, so we ate quickly to make it in time for the event. The pie exceeded my expectations in size and was filled with salmon, cod, shrimp, carrots, and asparagus. I appreciated the generous amount of seafood and the perfect balance of white wine sauce. The pastry was light and flaky, and the salad had just the right amount of dressing. My dining companions also enjoyed their meals, including the lamb pie, avocado and bacon burger, and steak and mushroom boxty. I tried a bite of the boxty, a potato pancake topped with sour cream and filled with steak and mushrooms in a flavorful sauce. While it wasn't my favorite, the dish came with plenty of fries. The service was decent, though not exceptional. I would definitely return for another Paint Nite, a pre-movie dinner, or a work lunch.
Good service overall.... Only tried the fish chips which were battered well but the fish itself was tasteless and left a lot to be desired! The accompanying fries were yummy perfectly salted. The extra side of gravy was delish! P.S. The ladies restroom was clean well kept! Always a nice bonus!
