The Cafe Hub - Edinburgh

Our three course Christmas-themed lunch was absolutely lovely. The service was stellar, the food was plentiful but not too much and all tasted delicious. I am surprised that this cafe isn't rated higher! Located in the heart of Old town in an absolutely glorious building, I'm so happy we stopped in!

I stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant. I had a delicious sausage sandwich, and my mom thoroughly enjoyed her bacon sandwich. The staff was very friendly as well. I highly recommend this place.

I have visited Edinburgh frequently with my family and had previously found The Hub in the gallery to be an excellent lunch spot. However, during a visit in the summer with a large group, they completely messed up our order and the service was poor. Unfortunately, I experienced the same problems during my most recent visit. The lack of training is evident as the staff did not clear plates and once again messed up our order. Although the food was served quickly and to a good standard, the overall service experience ruined the lunch for me. I had hoped to give this place another chance as we always enjoyed visiting when in Edinburgh, but it seems that more staff and better training are needed to improve the experience. I probably won't be returning myself, as this was the second strike and there are plenty of other local places to try out. It's a real shame.

I’m sorry to say I really resented paying for my lunch. Ordered baked beans and cheese-sent it back as there was barely even a tablespoon of beans in a huge puddle of melted (then hardened) cheese-the most bizarre way to present a baked potato and cheese I’ve seen-clearly microwaved. Was at least then given the cheese and more decent (but still tiny) bowl of beans. Other son ordered the chicken and chips-medium-didn’t expect one small piece of chicken and just a load of chips-large would have been a normal portion. If the price had been reasonable I wouldn’t have minded as much but it was hugely overpriced for underwhelming food. Especially annoying after I’d asked if we could eat outside-told we could then then found out you couldn’t get the full menu outside so had to go back in. When I complained about the food a member of staff even admitted that costs were being cut-don’t know if that’s true but have to say it did seem like portion sizes were much smaller than last time I visited. Very disappointing. Sure it’s fine for cake and a drink but wouldn’t eat here again.

The location is fantastic, but the atmosphere is impersonal. The service is not particularly courteous, poorly trained, they know very little if anything at all about the dishes. We were given mixed messages, tossed from one side to another, table, counter, back to table, our orders took forever and they still gave us a hard time because they could not find where we were. The food? Nothing special. Unfortunate menu specials such as carrot and CORIANDER put us off immediately. I notice the manager acknowledging some of the negative reviews here, but perhaps he/she should spend a lot more time training the staff in proper customer service. The Edinburgh experience deserves something better than this current scenario is offering us.
