The Velvet Lounge is a great little indoor/outdoor bar attached to The Curry Club Indian restaurant. This is a great venue to grab a drink and catch some local flavor, performance artists, poetry readings, open mic, etc. There's always a little something for everyone and you can usually catch something many nights of the week. The vibe here is really chill and laid back. There is a lot of overflow sometimes from The SBU students who pack the place out. Bartenders are friendly, creative, and VERY generous with their pours which is very much appreciated. We THANK YOU and will always take care of you back! Keep em coming...pleeeze! TVL has a decent craft beer selection with seasonal varieties on hand as well in addition to an extensive list of whiskeys, vodkas, and gins (like my favorite Hendrick's gin). The environs are pretty funky with eccentric art work scattered about the bar. If I had to describe, I would say the scene is like antique goth meets Soho. There's a bunch of Victorian-style couches scattered about as well as high top tables and chairs to park it. During the summer there is an outdoor patio with tables and umbrella and makes for a fun get away. During the winter the same patio has a fire pit which also makes for a fun time. Inside they have a few flat screens to catch a game on quiter nights. Being literally attached to The Curry Club (there seems to be some mysterious passageway from the back of the bar to the restaurant), one can order a vast selection of Indian dishes to accompany your spirits while seated at the bar. A huge bonus (probably should've theft this out), is on Tuesdays when they put out a huge Indian spread in the bar area...for FREE! Needless to say this attracts a lot of broke Stony Brook students who come and buy like 1 soda to indulge in the buffet. So yeah, the Velvet Lounge is definitely a place to hit for chill night out, a drink before hitting the Curry Club, or to come hear some good live music (most of the time). I always keep this one in my rotation!
So this is a Lounge that accepts credit cards as payment and shares it's parking lot with neighboring businesses. So parking space might be limited. As you enter, you'll notice that they have an outside dining area and a stage for live music to be played here. Inside is the same set up, with tables and chairs and a stage for live music to be played, but it has more of a stylish look to it. With mirrors and wall art all over. The Bar Area is placed against wall to the right of the building, with about 20 beers on tap and a small menu of food to select from. They have separate restrooms for men and women, but like the parking lot, it's shared with neighboring businesses. This place has a cozy, more artistic vibe to it and is worth checking out.
What some call the mitochondria of the cell ; the Lounge of the Velvitius exists at the intersection of art and technology. A swampy brothel and eclectic panic room for gender-bending troglodytes and subhuman slug-like vagabonds. The ambience at the Velveeta Language is familiar, yet terrifying. Permeating through the air, there is an aromatic melange of exotic spices, burning plastic, and your fathers deodorant, giving somewhat of an ethereal quality to the space. Find a cozy spot to settle into, wherever your wretched body may land. The floor is completely present and there is the illusion of at least three walls. The Vivi Lounge-Stocking 's fare is typical for the area. A short menu lists a few bar classics such as Lobster 's Delight, Creamed Beast, Onion Hell, Mike, and Soup of the Day. World class mixologists will have your abdomen slashed open in delight with hand crafted cocktails ranging from sure to STOP . I cannot recommend this place enough. If you find the things that you enjoy to be pleasing, the Velviteer 's Longotamus is without a doubt
Live music! A friend of a friend was playing at the Velvet Lounge and we trooped over there to see what it was all about. The place is located in front part of the building that houses the Curry Club restaurant and that is where all similarity ends. This is a semi sorta hipster place but since they are LI hipsters, they are kind of tame and smell less offensive than their NY brethren... The place is small on the inside long and narrow is the best way to explain the layout. Bartenders are decent and as mentioned elsewhere, the prices are sweet. Good beer selection to choose from and we didn't get clubbed over the head for drinks. The night we were there had three bands playing. The first guys up were a awesome rockabilly group with our friends following up with a lot of 80's and up tunes. The third group was a bit more speed metal so we headed outside and grabbed a table. The outside seating is casual apparently there used to be a tiki set up out there but it looked like it was no longer in use. Cool group of people all around and yes, there is a $5 cover for whatever reason but $5 3 bands cheap. Parking all around the place.
