We chose this restaurant for our 50th wedding anniversary as we were married close by in Nth Berwick. The initial impression of the restaurant and setting was excellent. Our table was perfect and overlooked the golf course. We were given the menu and wine list and my wife requested a vegetarian option which was on a separate menu, but with limited choice. We chose our wine from the list but was informed that it was not available so we chose another recommended by the waiter. The wine was acceptable but not the one we wanted. The description of my starter, a seafood concoction, was detailed and very long unfortunately the dish itself was minuscule and consequently difficult to judge whether it was good or not . My wife 's starter was a cheese souffle and excellent. I chose duck breast for the main course and requested that it was just pink. I was assured it would be. The dish arrived with two very rare slabs of meat on something it looked and tasted awful. My wife ordered a cheese gnocchi with a poached hen 's yolk. Luckily we had the description otherwise we would have had no idea what it was. The dish was most unattractive and could not be described as a 'main ' course. She left most of it, the little there was, as it was just unappetizing. For pudding I chose a lemon tart which was very good and my wife had a selection of cheeses to make up for her awful main course. The cheeses were very acceptable. We did not stay for coffee or after dinner drinks as we just wanted to leave. Our overall impression therefore was of extreme disappointment. We were looking forward to an excellent dinner to celebrate our anniversary and the evening was ruined. We have eaten in the Roux restaurant in Bray and that was, as it should be, very good. Luckily the following evening we went to a 'pop up ' restaurant in a delicatessen in Nth Berwick and the complete meal for both of us was truly excellent. We would not return to Grey walls.
Greywalls is an unusual perhaps unique eatery. It's combination of Lutchens and Jekyll background with the addition of Chez Rous style and a golfing twist simply make it a must visit experience. The building is unusual, the garden is memorable and the food is at the fine end of fine dining. I would recommend it to anyone.
Overall experience very good apart of couple of issues First -waiting too long for food and bill at the end. Staff just ignored us at the end,,,,,even if we asked about bill....we have been wating about 15/20minutes for it. Food amazing very well presented. Interior decoration very out dated-needs a bit fresh look especially curtains they don not match the chairs. Kind Regards Guest
The location is great and the staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful. The amuse bouche were light and tasty. I chose the split pea soup as starter sadly, it was not very flavourful, (not offensive either to be fair) the soft egg was easily the best part. The main course, (Aberdeen Angus), surprised my wife and I as we were given serrated knives to eat it ... we 're old enough to remember the 80 's not at all what we expected here as we thought that we had moved beyond this ... we 've eaten cheaper, tastier, more tender, steaks from supermarkets. I did not try any desserts but the Passionfruit souffle looked lovely (as did all the desserts) and the Petits Fours went down a treat with those who could eat them!
Set in a beautiful location Chez Roux at Greywalls is a hidden gem. Wonderful setting, good food and excellent service. We will make a return trip!
