I've driven past the May Street Larder many times and probably would continue to do so had my other half not sought it out for its healthy offerings (particularly gluten free). The interior of the restaurant kind of matches that 'tree hugger' bohemian "basicness" that I have come to associate with healthy menus and it I like that charm. Ordered the kedgeree with wild rice (gf), house-smoked salmon, sauerkraut and chilli and was taken aback by the flavours. I didn't expect such a great taste. And eventually after more nudging and urging from the wife and kids, I did opt for some sweet treats as we left the restaurant. They hit the spot and probably left a calorific dent in my mid-drift, but darn they were good.Don't expect fine dining or flash service, but do expect a great ambience and meal.
Another of Perth's "order at the counter" deals which seems common.... I guess too hard to get waiters that can take orders and keep up....cost-cutting???.... Twice in one day I encountered this. Having said that food choices, quality and taste offerings were great. Quite unusual, tasty flavour combinations and coffee quality also good. However...... food service was VERY slow, close to. 45 mins from the time we ordered till delivery, watching other nearby tables who had ordered after us being served and completing their meals. Perhaps a Wagyu burger takes exceptionally long cooking time.
We checked this cafe out after rave reviews in our local newspaper but were very disappointed yesterday It's very noisy, seating hit and miss, not managed by staff, once we finally found a table we were comfortable at the service after placing your order was very slow Yes it was 11.00 am. Sat morning but quite chaotic rather than just "busy"The green shashuka chosen by our friends was ok as was my Bircher muesli but we couldn't wait to leave and find somewhere quiet to chat Shame really won't bother again
We went to May St Larder this morning for breakfast with another couple on the strength of reviews and publicity. Won't be going back. 2 of us chose the sourdough crumpets with lemon curd, blueberries and crispy meringues. The crumpets were tough, and extremely small. The lemon curd was nice, had about 6 blueberries and the meringue was a few shards of very thin grey floppy stuff. Certainly bore no relation to crispy meringue! Half of the scrambled eggs ordered by one of us was left on the plate and another ordered eggs with truffle. He couldn't taste truffle at all. Coffee was just okay in very small cups. Overinflated prices for underwhelming food.
