My husband and I make it a point to dine here every Taco Tuesday, and they offer a special for each day of the week as well. Although it's just him managing the restaurant, I’ve never had to wait more than 15 minutes for freshly made tacos or a hearty breakfast burrito.
Now, let’s discuss the service. The owner is often present and works hard, but he has a condescending attitude towards his employees, treating them more like numbers than individuals. It's worth mentioning that Eagle River isn't exactly bustling with people, and the wages offered don't really encourage commuting from afar. This is my biggest frustration with the place. Another downside is their limited hours. I believe they’re currently open just three days a week? I stopped by last Wednesday only to find them closed, and there was also a day when they shut down by 2 PM. At this point, I think I've had enough of this establishment until they sort things out—specifically, the owner. I doubt they’ll make it through to the next season at this rate.
The food is ok (i have tried all the chicken tamales, the corn tamale, the beef tacos). I wish they still sold salsa because I didnt get a chance to try it. A good salsa makes any food taste that much better. They mentioned that nobody bought it so they stopped selling it. They have a table with chairs but no public restroom. Its pretty confusing on whether or not the table is there to be eaten on or just to wait for your food. If it was meant for waiting they should have chosen a couple of benches instead. If it was meant to be eaten on they should open their restroom to the public so that we have a way to wash our hands. I would recommend this place only to support our local businesses and if you really want tamales that are not pre-packaged and sold in grocery stores.
I tried both the red and green tamales, and they were served hot and absolutely delicious. My favorite was the red tamale, which had a nice kick from the spices and peppers. Since the tamales are on the smaller side, I would recommend ordering more than two next time. They were moist, unlike other tamales I've had that can be crumbly and dry. I also ordered a side of rice and beans, and I was really impressed with the flavor of both. The beans, in particular, were cooked with fresh roasted peppers and various spices, adding to the taste. Topped with pico de gallo and sour cream, this made for a delightful and flavorful meal that I would definitely enjoy again.
Just went by to check out the new place. Family-run, bare-boned (in a good way) tamale shop. $3 ala carte tamales with a lot of variety, including vegetarian options. The pork with red chili tamale I just had was delicious! I can see stocking up on these for lunches.
