We had a very enjoyable dining experience in Dormans at La Table Sourdet. The cuisine featuring dishes from various regions of France is perfectly complemented by the Champagne country tradition for tasteful decor and for fine service. Of course, the champagnes make it a true regional experience as well. We had for starter a terrific asparagus soup with a delicious lobe of foie gras, a perfect combination. We then had a confit de canard where the duck was as good as we have ever had in any of the top southwestern food specialty restaurants in Paris. Our desert was also a winner--strawberry and raspberry tart with a perfect homemade pastry base. There was also a cheese course including in the very reasonable menu but we were fine already with the excellent dishes. The 'house ' champagne was also excellent and at an unbeatable price, as was the entire menu.
The menu du jour here is always delicious. Really excellent food in a very smart dining room. The quintessential french restaurant.
Well, Dormans is not quite *that* far off the beaten path, as it is located along the Marne and not all that far from the A4 to Paris. But Madame and I drove over from Epernay on back roads, on a rainy but nice Thursday morning, and before getting onto the Autoroute we wanted to find something other than rest stop fare. La Table Sourdet, right on the main street through town, more than filled the bill. We were delighted The place is, or seems to be, family operated, and at mid day when we visited it was nearly filled with what appeared to be locals taking themselves out for a nice meal. We were welcomed warmly and seated immediately, and each selected lunchtime menus for (get ready... just E11,80 each. The results were wonderful I had delicious lamb, as did Madame, and we shared carafes of the local rose. Dessert was a superb creme brulee with some unusual added spice notes not in any way just a casual throw in lunchtime option, but rather a really nicely thought out finish to the meal. Service was quick and very friendly the staff were nicely tolerant of my bad French and the final tab, well under E50 for a feast of a lunch, sent us off all the happier. When and if we're nearby again that would be very nice we'll stop in for dinner Parking in the main street was scarce that noontime, but we found a snug spot not too far away. I believe Visa/Carte Bleu is accepted, although as it happened I paid cash that day. We left feeling we'd made a real discovery one of several on this trip, in slightly out of the way places and gradually made our way in to Paris...
We stopped by chance on the holiday road. very good day menu and at a more than reasonable price. the staff is smiling and very welcoming. The decor is a little to see, but the rest is not to change!
