The staff was friendly and the cooked breakfast was amazing, although the continental breakfast that was included in the room price seemed a bit lacking. The evening meal was satisfactory.
We have stayed at many luxurious and elegant 4-star spa hotels over the years, but decided to choose this charming hotel for our 22nd wedding anniversary weekend getaway. The hotel is located just a short walk from Matlock high street and cable cars. Our room had a stunning view of a cliff, the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were modern and clean. The meals were delicious, everything we ate was of the highest quality and beautifully presented. Despite the hotel being full, we enjoyed a peaceful meal in the evening with no noise from other rooms. The front desk staff were very polite and helpful, maintaining the hotel at an impressively high standard. We have already booked to return with our children and this may become our new go-to getaway spot. Thank you for a wonderful stay with an amazing cliff view.
There are now only a few hotels left in Matlock compared to what used to be, as the town has lacked investment both in terms of money and passion from the county hall. However, High Tor Hotel is a true gem. The hotel has always been beautiful, well-maintained, and respects and preserves its period details, making it stand out from other hotels in the area. I was very impressed by the courtesy shown by the management, their politeness towards both my partner and me was exceptional. The hotel has a can-do attitude and a genuine desire to provide comfort to guests through customer service, which is sincere and not forced. The breakfast offered a choice of hot cooked food as well as continental options, catering to hikers, walkers, and travelers in the area. The rooms were immaculate, well-equipped with fast broadband, and the bar and reception area were in line with the Georgian style of the hotel, showcasing its history through engravings and pictures on the walls. High Tor Hotel maintains its historical significance, much like the old Temple Hotel and the New Bath did in the past. Well done, High Tor, for providing excellent service and a pleasant stay in the restaurant, bar, and our room. A benchmark for other hotels in the area to aspire to.
Very conveniently located if you want to walk into Matlock bath. Room 5 has a lovely big bath which was nice although the furnishings were a bit oddly placed the room, the wardrobe is difficult to access due to a bed settee being placed next to it but it was clean and bright. I did notice as we booked that continental breakfast was included this was cereals, yogurts, fruit, toast and croissants sadly no meats or cheeses. We didn't eat at the hotel as we booked to see the illuminated boats and illuminations which took place between 6-9pm which was unfortunately the same times they serve dinner. The only criticism was at breakfast we were brought tea/coffee then had to ask for cups and milk!
My wife and I booked this hotel because it was in a convenient location between Matlock and Matlock bath. We arrived early for check in and were told our room wasn't ready and couldn't have it till 3 pm as it was the rules, any other hotel ,it would have been ready,so we had to kill time in town for 2 hours. The young guy on reception gave us an envelope with our check in details ,even though we couldn't check in and told us to choose breakfast for the following morning .We booked this hotel cause breakfast was included, I thought cooked breakfast but no, it was only continental breakfast, had to pay for full English, which I wasn't happy about. The room was nice and tidy, the bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was nice.It did look like it had been decorated in a hurry, with socket extensions screwed to the walls instead of proper sockets in the rooms and they had a heater on the wall which didn't work ,so they put a space heater in the room , which is a fire hazard . I wanted a bath ,but the plug was faulty and the water kept draining out . We slept ok ,but there is a lot of traffic noise . Breakfast was served in a dining room that looked like a school canteen. On being seated ,you were given a plastic tray with your cups, plates and cutlery (lay your own table) .On the last day our cooked breakfast was cold, we complained and was given money off the bill.On checking out,we didn't even get a goodbye. Overall, we will not be returning, the whole hotel lacks any rustic charm except for the outside and we found the whole experience very sterile and the staff very uncommunicative.
