We stumbled onto (into) Camp Cookhouse and General Store after 3 days of paddling the Milk River, all of us ravenous and unwilling to deal with freeze dried stuff for another dinner. What we found was a treasure of delicious meals in a wonderfully friendly, family run eatery that deserves high praise and patronage. Among the 5 of us, over two sittings, we ran through a good bit of the menu and everything was toothsome, substantial and priced very reasonably considering the location, short season and quality: Beans and cornbread savoury sweet spicy; Potato latke like gramma made; Smash salad love the jicama; Ratatouille to make a frenchman cry (but that 's easy); St. Louis smoke ribs a carnivores dream. And the place has a play place for kids, too. My advice is that if your in Elkwater camping, forget the RV vittles and enjoy the offerings at Camp. And, if you 're looking for something to do in the Hat, take a drive down just for the dining experience. Chip Scialfa Calgary
We love cooking breakfast when camping but how can you resist running into town to grab breakfast here. So good with homemade ingredients, friendly fast service and excellent pricing for what you get. The lattke’s with their brisket are amazing!!!! Another reason to go camping in Cypress hills and a great stop passing by Elkwater.
We ordered takeout from Camp Cookhouse while camping at nearby Firerock Campground. The meal we had planned for our final night had spoiled in our cooler, so we decided to get takeout bring it back to our campsite. I had heard SO many rave reviews about how Camp used to be so amazing when it was owned by the chef that was on Top Chef (it's not anymore apparently? . I was concerned the food would be sub par, as there aren't a lot of restaurant options in Elkwater, but I was intrigued when I looked at the menu. My husband and I both ordered the Big Tasty Burger, and shared a Smash Salad (without chicken and the Bacon Baked Beans, and let me tell you we were both blown away by how good the food was! The salad was very unique, light and fresh; the beans were smoky, not mushy or overly salty (like some can be ; and the burgers were juicy, well seasoned and huge. My in laws visited the next night and told us they thought the food was amazing as well. I appreciated that they served the takeout in biodegradable dishes (even a paper bag! . You can't see it from the entrance, but there is a nice sizeable patio behind the restaurant for those that don't feel comfortable eating indoors yet. I will happily eat here again the next time we camp in Elkwater!
Everything is made from scratch and the menu is interesting. We stopped for lunch on the patio when out for a daytrip on the September long weekend. Food was excellent and well priced. Service was good and the washrooms were clean. The store was fun to browse good selection.
