I started with the hot and sour chicken soup, which was more like a bowl of slightly spicy stock with large chunks of chicken and whole button mushrooms that were impossible to eat with a spoon. Needless to say, I sent it back and was not charged for it. The other starters ranged from mediocre to very good, with my wife enjoying her pork rib. As for the mains, one of them was sea bass, so I won't comment on that. The other four dishes were nothing special, just something I could easily make at home with some vegetables, a chicken breast, and a bottle or sachet of sweet and sour, teriyaki, or black bean sauce. The food was decent, but not worth the high price tag of twenty pounds per main course. The staff were friendly and pleasant, but seemed understaffed and not very attentive. The drinks were also overpriced, with a pint of unfamiliar lager costing more than six pounds.
The starters of satay chicken and fishcakes were just okay, but the mains of pad thai and black bean beef were awful. The beef was cold and the noodles were sticky as if reheated. It was an expensive meal for such disappointing food. We raised our concerns with the manager, who offered us complimentary drinks (a bottle of fizz and a pint), but he mentioned that the restaurant being a thoroughfare was to be expected. Overall, I was really disappointed and will not be returning to either the hotel or restaurant. There are better places out there for both food and accommodation.
I visited this restaurant for my daughter's birthday. We were seated and had to wait for our drinks, which was not a good start. It took another 10-15 minutes before our order was taken. It was a full hour before our starters arrived, with an apology and prawn crackers just before they were served. The squid was tough like rubber bands, but my wife and daughter were still happy. The main course took another thirty minutes, and people who arrived after us were served before us. The beef and black bean main course was also very chewy, as if the chef was on a roll. When the bill came, we were told we wouldn't be charged for the prawn crackers. We won't be coming back here, as Zen in Durham offers much better food and service.
Visited Ramside Hall today for lunch. When we arrived, we discovered major refurbishments taking place. A workman directed us to Fusion restaurant nearby. Our initial ‘welcome’ was less than friendly unfortunately. Lady with glasses. Once we were seated, I had a question about something on the menu. I was speaking with the young lady behind the bar when the lady with the glasses came over and rudely interrupted our conversation without apology, telling the barmaid that she needed something doing. The barmaid and I were surprised by her rudeness. Anyway, food was good quality but expensive. Too many people wandering around with loose robes for my liking. The robes have belts for a reason for goodness sake. We won’t be back.
Quality of food was absolutely excellent, included in the spa deal alongside Ramside Hall. Honey maple tofu from the vegan menu was absolutely fantastic. Only room for improvements was based on the service had to go to the bar to be served and pay our bill after waiting a lengthy time at our table. Fortunately we also looked online ahead of our visit so knew there was a vegan menu to ask for, however this was not given to us!
