I would not recommend this pub for food but looks good for a drink if you are in the area.
I have been going to the Swingle tree for around six years, but since it had an update and possible change hands, it has gone down hill. Last night, I had dinner with my wife. There was a young boy around five or six years old running around collecting glasses, rolling on the floor, clearly the child of of of the female bar staff. So what you may say, but, as we ate our dinner in the conservatory part of the pub, the young boy sat down at the table opposite us, and started picking his nose and wiping the outcome on the table in front of him! I know young children are allowed in a public house supervised, but this child was clearly not supervised and his action were nothing short of disgusting! I am not sure if I will eat or use the Swingle Tree again. Unless the owner has a strong talk, to his bar staff. When Martin was in change of the bar, before the revamp, this would have never had happened.
We went to a restaurant on Friday night with a group of six. Five of us ordered steak and ale pie, while one ordered chicken pie. However, when the orders came out, we received four steak and ale pies and one chicken pie. We informed the waitress that there was a pie missing, and she went to check. She returned and explained that they had run out of steak and ale pie. Unfortunately, the person who originally ordered it declined to have anything else. If we had been informed earlier, someone else could have swapped their meal.
Staff behind bar were friendly, serving staff were inexperienced. Served roast without asking if we wanted any sauces. Had to go and ask, by time sauces brought dinner was finished (or would have been cold). Roast comes in three sizes and meat portions were good, but it was poor quality, tasted bland, really disappointing. Wouldn't eat here again based on quality of the roast.
The Swingletree is my local, but over the last year or so since the redecoration, it has changed, sadly for me, it has gone down hill. The food is now too expensive, along with the drinks. The staff, don't seem to know much about the beverages they sell, I asked for two glasses of Pinot Noir, the young bar staff, did not know what that was! So I ended up with house white. I now go to the Bull's Head, in Callington, it maybe a mile away from my house, but it is excellent value for money, with great food just the way the Swingle Tree use to be. Come on Swingle Tree sort your self out.
