Visited on a glorious sunny Sunday for lunch in April and very glad we did. The food was delicious. The hogget (older lamb) was great and our non-lamb eater had an excellent vegetarian option of squash and grains which was much more exciting than that...might at first sound. Sides included a cheesy leek with truffle dish and barbecued hispi cabbage all lovely. And after Sunday lunch, we walked around their nature walk. Only one other diner we saw did so. The rest missed out: wild bees and young lambs, spring sunshine and beautiful countryside turned lunch into a day well spent.
(Note the venue are aware, have apologised and refunded my meal) Hugely disappointed with our experience. I have been looking forward to visiting here. I am gluten free and was reassured on email that they can cater for dietary requirements, and often do. General...set menu sent 48 hr before visit, but no details of my adjustments (menu was very grain heavy, so I wanted reassurance of my food options). These were provided on enquiry and the meals sounded lovely, although they stated they do not usually provide the dietary requirement menu in advance, which I found strange as most of us with these needs have them for medical reasons and therefore like to have reassurance. The Staff on the night were very welcoming on arrival and attentive, venue lovely, sat by log burner stove, live music lovely. It went down hill when my friends sourdough, thickly sliced home made bread arrived with the famous smoked butter, and then my thin sliced white bread, that looked like a shop bought loaf. To top this off the top slice was very dry as I think it had been sat under a heat lamp. Smoked butter was lovely, but gobsmacked at the GF bread quality for this type of venue. (There is no excuse when a sourdough and tiger loaf can even be bought even in a supermarket) Starter as advised and lovely Main course was not as I was advised. I was expecting polenta with my beef and Vegetables, but brown tasteless lentils arrived instead. Dessert was meant to be z cider mousse and was the usual chocolate brownie, which seemed like a lazy, cop out. My friend felt very awkward as her meal was as expected, and delicious. Although this venue CAN cater for dietary requirements my experience shows that the food offered will be of a lower standard to the standard set menu. I was informed the reason my food options had changed is that some other diners were dairy and GF. Its a shame that my food was compromised as a result, as I do not not need a dairy free diet. We were also told he bread was from a Baker and had been taste tested in house!? I would suggest that none of the chefs would accept sliced white packet bread with an expensive meal out, and someone GF shouldn't either nowadays with so many superior options available. I worry this venue has become complacent with it sucess. I hope lessons have been learnt from my experience and more consideration will be taken with dietary needs and the standard of the food provided, or they need to state they cannot do cater for anything other than their set menu.
Service friendly and relaxed Ambiance just special Superb selection of beers and wines And the food …. Smoked butter …. I am hooked on and hispi cabbage in butter milk just sunning … the whole meal was superb…. But when you lift the little...details to the next level … it becomes a wow ! Thanks Heather and the team…..
We enjoyed a farm supper here after a long period of anticipation having seen Nancarrow on Rick Steins programme. We had to pay in full upon booking which given problems with people booking then not attending across Cornwall during the summer season this was understandable....We’re from Cornwall so the setting was a typical Cornish farm, very pretty of course, the venue itself did present very well as a wedding venue, set up as a large restaurant it was warm, clean and the staff were excellent. We were welcomed warmly and they were very knowledgeable. The meal was beautifully presented, first off was the bread and smoked whipped butter, absolutely delicious, could not fault it. Along with it was a dish of a clear substance with coloured spots which we took to be a dip which came with the bread. When our beef and vegetables arrived we enquired when the monkfish which was on the menu would be brought we found out we had just eaten it! Quite embarrassing! We love our food, but we are not experts, so we now know what cured monkfish looks like! Onto the brisket of beef, this had been cooked over a wood fire overnight and boy was it good! You really could eat it with a spoon. Absolutely lovely. The vegetables with it though were a bit of a disappointment. One dish was dry and bland despite containing seaweed, the other was pickled very strongly and overpowered anything else it was with. Pudding however was excellent, not too sweet with delicious warm popcorn. Overall we’re very glad we went, we would say that some normally prepared fish and local vegetables would have been much more enjoyable. We don’t mind trying something new but in our opinion the fish and veg were over “cheffed” Clearly a lot of work and effort was involved but it was rather lost on us unfortunately. As a local business we are keen to support them, so we’re hoping to try the Sunday lunch next!
