I purchased two orders of Egusi soup Saturday evening. My wife had to wait in line behind one person for 15 minutes as they taste tested several items. The owner allowed this to go on for as long as it did.Anyway, when we finally got home to try the soup we discovered that it had no taste whatsoever, only the textured feeling that egusi was in my soup but no actual taste. It was like I was eating plain grits or something. I grew up eating egusi soup and I have never experienced this in my life. My guess is maybe it was prepared days before and lost its potency somehow, I’m not sure though. Anyway I bought 2 portions worth and I literally have to throw the other one away. It was as if they forgot to put seasoning in it or something. Again, I’m not sure how you can have the literal Egusi seed in a soup and yet there be no taste. I guess I’ve seen it all.I had a similar experience with their Jollof rice and I was compelled to call the store back. The owner was very polite and explained to me that she has learned to make her dishes not as flavorful and spicy so as to appeal to her demographic that are not as accustomed to West African cuisine as others. I don’t know if this same tactic played a role in the Egusi soup fiasco but I doubt it because the last time I ordered Egusi soup from them it was good.Overall my experience at this restaurant is the food was bad 2 out of 3 times. I will not be wasting any more money here. I do, however, want to make clear that the owner is very nice and polite. I also want to make clear that in my opinion this food is not a good representation of West African cuisine. At least if you’re use to Nigerian cuisine.
Hands down the absolute best place to eat the have a variety of food prices are great you get a good amount of food as well. Definitely recommend.
