Sozai is a hidden gem. Hajime is a master chef. There is great attention to detail, excellent flavor profiles and a strong focus on sustainability. Highly recommend the omakase. We happily made the drive from Ann Arbor for this lovely dining experience.
TLDR: This place is delicious!I some times tell people how I am the luckiest girl in the world. Today was just an example of that. Was visiting my brother and shared with him how I was craving sushi, but I would just wait until I went back home instead of eating it here in Michigan. Then this morning, I went to the dealership to take in his car for an oil exchange, while, I was waiting, I was flipping through a magazine and saw that there was an article about the restaurant.I read the first paragraph in the article and my eyes lit up because Chef Sato used to be the owner of Mashiko in West Seattle after a recommendation from my sister and her husband when I went to visit. I enjoyed every bite I had during the meal at Mashiko when he ran it, I ended up going there three out of the four days I was in town (I did not go there the fourth day since they were closed).I messaged my sister and brother-in-law shared with them the good news! I let my brother know that we should try eating there while I was in town. They accept reservations between 4:30-5:03 or after 9 PM and I tried calling multiple times and got a busy signal, but my brother called and was able to get a reservation for that day since there was a cancellation. We had the Chiso Omasake as well as two sakes that were recommended by the chef and everything from the first to last bite was superb. I came in happy (because yay! Chef Sato opened up a new restaurant) and left happy and full because the food delicious. I made dinner reservation for the evening before I leave.
Excellent Omakase in Michigan area with great quality, taste and looking! This is my 1th sushi place in Metro Detroit are and can't wait to go back for another run.
This is the best sushi bar in America.Hajime is what I refer to as a Sushi Chef's Sushi Chef. If you've worked in the industry long enough you'll realize that what Hajime has accomplished with Sozai is a perfect blend of refined Japanese culinary technique, ecological common sense (keeping endangered species off the menu should not be a moral crusade and sincere appreciation for good food and hospitality. We're extremely lucky to have Hajime with us in Michigan!Every sushi bar should be modeled like this unfortunately the majority have either been optimized for profits at the expense of quality and/or sustainability. It's actually a shame that Sozai is considered to be a special sushi restaurant when in reality this is what a sushi bar should look like. Do you ever wonder why every sushi bar has a menu full of dragon rolls Las Vegas rolls and California rolls Do you actually know what's in a California Roll? Why fly something halfway around the world when it's right in your backyard?
