So as somebody from a decent sized city in the Midwest traveling for work in what I would call the middle of nowhere, Appalachia I never had high hopes of great food being an option. Well I was wrong. Being where I 'm from, I 'm used to hole in the wall places having great food because it 's easy and inexpensive to source fresh ingredients for anything. I knew that in the middle of a mountain range that farms are not abundant and that usually translates to lesser quality restaurants in the area. And that is something I experienced first hand with other places around there. When you walk in, you get typical great Southern hospitality. This is still awkward to me (the Midwest is still known for it 's politeness) but it 's the normal way of being around here even though it feels 'over the top ' to me. The place looks like an old diner from the 80 's or 90 's with either super basic chairs and tables or some old booths that feel original to the building. When I looked at the menu, I thought I was going to get some standard pub food and that was it. Boy I was wrong. The first sign I knew I was wrong was hearing the kitchen operate behind me. Communicating about what tickets came up and calling out what was dropping in to be cooked. Second was seeing other people 's food. The burgers I saw come out of the kitchen were just huge and very well plated. Nothing I haven 't seen before but surprising given my first impressions. What I ordered was the fried catfish with hush puppies and fries with a side of coleslaw. I 'm not familiar with what a good hush puppy is but it seemed slightly dense and slightly dry but once again, I have no idea how it 's supposed to be. The coleslaw tasted nice and light while having the right amount of sauce. The fries were good by my standards. Crispy, medium thickness and well seasoned. But the catfish was a wow moment for me. The batter wasn 't super thin like I 'm used to, it was thick and had a good amount of seasoning to it. I felt like there was salt, pepper, and a hint of what I would call Cajun seasoning. It was the right amount of flavor to also let you know you were eating catfish and not just some basic fish product. The next couple days I ordered some of their daily specials and some desserts and have been answered by everything. They had a chipotle chicken wrap that was actually fresh and not over-sauced that was prepared by somebody who actually cared about the fact that the tortilla can actually make a difference. The next night I had the Ribeye Oscar and everything was perfect. Real crab meat was used which you can 't take for granted anymore along with the steak being perfectly medium rare as I asked for. I don 't know who is coming up with the daily specials or who is in charge of playing and making everyone look the way it does on the plate but whomever they are, they are doing an amazing job and I can 't recommend this place enough.
Breakfast was amazing. Great hometown place to eat home cooking. Pizza is only one thing they serve. You have a lot of other options. They also have a full bar. Great place to take the whole family. Parking: parking all around the building. Kid-friendliness: Open areas, booths, fish tank, they have a tic-tac-toe table to play with game pieces shaped like pizza and mushrooms.
